Anybody in the US/close to the border, you can get STF 501s for $36.30 USD today - shipped. You have to ship them to a US address, but that's a smoking deal for great jeans. levis.com, code FLASH40.

That is indeed a good deal. I love my 501's, and I've been meaning to get a new pair. I've been spending too much recently, though, so I'll have to wait for the next sale to come around.

I had planned to go to Value Village for pants today, not knowing about the sale. Did not make for the most pleasant shopping experience. Also, I couldn't find a pair of gray pants that fit.

I did find a tuxedo jacket that fit, however even at $4 with the sale, I don't see any occasion for me to wear it...ever, so I left it.

A tuxedo jacket is always useful. Tux pants are easy to come by, as are tux shirts. If you can find a good tux jacket, you should be able to assemble a full tux for under $20 at thrift stores. A tux is a useful thing to have, if only so you can class it up for a snazzy date.

I'm almost thirty and I can't think of a single occasion I've attended that a tuxedo would have been appropriate.

My haul tonight;

Light blue OCBD from a brand I don't recognize - $4
Blue and white striped polo, Land's End - $3.50
Green pastel shorts (so hot right now!) - $2.50
Piece de resistance, Carhartt work shorts, brand new with all store tags still on - $7.50

A new summer wardrobe for less than $20! :D

I think I've worn a tux around 4 times, and there have been probably 4 or 5 times that I would not have been overdressed in a tux, most of which I was wearing a dark pinstripe suit. I tend toward a grey power suit these days, though I really need to invest in a three-piece eventually.

I wouldn't consider a three-piece a necessary investment myself, but I don't wear suits much. I would like a good-quality, well fitting, solid navy or grey suit though. I have a black suit (ugh) and now a thrifted Glen plaid suit, but nothing in between.

I have two nice suits that fit well and one that needs tailoring. I wear a suit every couple weeks these days, probably going to be more often soon. I've got a couple of nice sportcoats and blazers that I don't wear terribly often, I'm probably going to need to pull them out and check the fit.

My co-founder has been known to throw a labcoat over a 3-piece and work in the machine shop for a couple hours. We might be a strange bunch of people.

Indeed. I have two (three if you count the one that fits if I gain too much weight for the normal two) navy blazers, one with gold buttons and one with plain plastic buttons. The one with plastic buttons is great for just putting over almost anything to class it up a bit, while the gold button one is appropriate for the yacht/country club that I can't afford to join but that I occasionally get invited to. I like to pair that one with my Nantucket reds (Land's End clearance area at Sears, $8!)

I had a daytime wedding.

Nice. I don't like the brass buttons myself, but they work better in that sort of environment anyways.

Plus, my glen plaid suit can work as separate items.

The only time I have worn a dinner jacket was to my high school graduation dinner dance. Opportunities for black tie do not come up very often in astronomy. The only work related event I have been with a dress code was a reception hosted by the Governor of Tasmania which requested a lounge suit for men. Seeing how various astronomers interpreted this was interesting.

I went to TJ Maxx today looking for a briefcase. They didn't have any decent ones, but I found a couple of nice University stripe ties, a technical-material polo shirt, and a pair of plaid shorts.

Not sure if I've posted this before. I think I considered otherwise though. I have a wedding soon and obviously want to look good. My brother says colors are light blue and black BUT doesn't want everybody to match, I told him what I was thinking and got back, "Word". So it's ok with him, I would like a group opinion though.
Red shirt, black tie, grey vest, black jacket. I considered blue to have a match color wise or green to compliment red, but I don't think I look good in green. Suggestions? I will try to obtain either a black hat or stick with my grey trilby for now. Thanks and be kind please.

By black jacket do you mean black suit or a black jacket with some other color pants?

4 to 10pm and black pants.
Considering the following
Red Shirt (har har)
Black tie
Blue OR grey vest
Blue OR grey/black jacket
Hope that helps.

- Black in the daytime is bad (as previously stated in this thread)
- Red is a poor choice for shirt for most complexions.
- Red and blue will invariably clash
- Non-matching vests should be avoided unless in daytime formal/semi-formal (morning dress/stroller) situations
- Black (neck)tie is not appropriate for a wedding -> associated with mourning
- Hats are generally not appropriate for weddings

If your brother is determined to have black suits, I'd wear it with a white shirt, grey/silver or light blue textured tie, white or light blue pocket square.

Light blue and black tend not to go well together, which is unfortunate.
