Hands behind the ears is the "correct" form.

While you are looking at crunches... reverse crunches are better for your posture and your well being in general. They work more of your abdominal muscles than a standard crunch as well.

I was doing really well with the walking to work thanks to the snow. But I slipped twice within 20 meters of my front door this morning and hurt my leg so I admitted defeat and dug my car out of the snowdrift.

I'm so close to dinging as well...

Posture, maybe, but it seems to me that they isolate the lower abs and hip flexers, not the abs as a whole.

Hands crossed over chest.

Wait, 'reverse crunches'? What...

Ah... I should elaborate. I am talking about the reverse crunch with leg lift. The normal reverse crunch isolates lower, just as normal regular crunch isolates upper.

This one. This is the good one.

Another awesome alternative is V-ups

Yesterday, I decided I'd stop having chips. (I had given them up for a few months but caved in. Needless to say my weight loss plateaued.) And today I will be doing my final all-nighter so I will be cutting out coffee/energy drinks as well.

Wish me luck and chastise me if I falter!

I do crunches with my arms crossed, even though I know behind the head is "correct".

I skipped pole this week because of work so I'm trying to figure out a way to make it up with a different activity.

Do some dips, possibly even pull ups?

I just set a new challenge for the group. This one should be more open to the Runners (though I think Matt or aeric are going to take this one).

This challenge is simply who gets the most points from basic boot camp stuff : running, pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, crunches. This one still goes off of who gets the most points, but it's narrowed the activities down. (This way I won't dominate it due to judo which I found unfair).

Regular crunches always hurt my back, so I do the reverse ones (met, that's when you move your legs instead of your torso).

Planks seem to work better for my abs though.

I would be doing the old almost-crunches from dance, but I don't know how to track them. You sit as if for crunches, but already at the upright-ish angle, with your arms parallel to the ground on either side of your legs. Then you pump it, basically, along with the music, until you start to feel the burn... and then you go back a little further so the angle's even more painful and do it double-time >:D. Repeat until you can't feel your abs.

My main problem with ab workouts in the past has been overdoing it. As in, exercising a lot one day, being in a lot of pain for a week, and either giving up because I didn't want to be in pain for a week after every workout, or doing my best not to give up and working out again and again despite the pain.

So now I just don't know how to start. I mean, do I do it until it hurts like I did before? Obviously, no, you need to make sure your muscles can recover, and hurting them is bad. But then how do I know when to stop?
The one time I did it right, the first ten workouts or so felt like I wasn't even working out at all. Then it started working my abs without hurting them. But that seems inefficient.

Well, my other problem is that it hurts my back. I've had people look at me do them so I could correct my posture but apparently I do them fine. So I'm going to look into doing planks instead. But thanks for the link, these website are pretty cool.

Pick up an ab roller. Go easy, start from your knees and keep your back straight. If the plank works for you and doesn't hurt then getting a little more dynamic with an ab roller should be fine. My Dad had back surgery and the hospital had him use one during his recovery... so I imagine it should be fine for you.

Today I wished that "cleaning my house" was a listed exercise on Fitocracy. Power Clean actually is, but the description is not exactly what I had in mind.

Yes, they're horrible for your lower back.

I would suggest side crunches(sometimes called 'V-ups'), they're killer on your abs, and don't make you feel bad.

Best thing to do when working out, in my opinion, is not to wait a whole week before you go at it again. Keep your body going, and it gets used to it. I find once every three or four days is a great way to get yourself started, but make sure not to overexert yourself.

twohundredsitups(and its sister, onehundredpushups) felt great when I could keep my enthusiasm for it high(the pacing isn't horrible, not too discouraging), but ultimately not what I wanted. Finding WAY more success in going to the gym with my buddy(five days in a row is a horror show, by the way), and doing a variety of workouts.

Best advice, start easy, work your way up. I started with wussy weights, but am steadily moving myself upwards. Don't push yourself too hard, or you'll hurt yourself and get discouraged.

Also, I don't know what Fitocracy is.

I've been waking up with a sore everything. And that's without doing any exercise that's worth even recording on Fitocracy (which by the way is a website. Check the first page for more info).

I'm so out of shape :P

As for ab workouts, I generally switch it up between crunches, jack knives, and bicycle crunches. I may start using the slant board again soon.

On an unrelated note, a seven foot tall man doing squats:
"Am I at 90 degrees yet? No. Dammit. Feels like I've been going down forever. Am I there now? Urgh. Okay. Almoooost...got it. Now back up. Yeah, look incredulous random guy. I could do 170 if I only went down 6 inches too."
