New Years Resolutions?
It's getting to that time of year again: at least, my Facebook feed is abuzz with it. Do you plan to have a New Years resolution for 2012? What is it? Do you tend to stick to your resolutions? Do you believe in New Years resolutions at all?
It's funny, but after only a single short paragraph, "resolutions" is no longer looking like a word.
This thread can be about making resolutions, discussing resolutions, supporting one another in resolutions, and so forth. Or discussing beards, if you don't like resolutions.

Re: New Years Resolutions?
My resolution is to make working out a regular thing as opposed to a when I have the time, energy and motivation thing. Less a new years resolution as it is a recurring new months resolution. Hopefully that fitocracy thing will help with that.

I have a similar resolution. Currently, I do a weekly exercise class, but if something gets in the way of that (eg. work), I tend not to bother making it up later in the week. My resolution is to make sure I get at least one dedicated session down per week, regardless of whether that means Monday night pole class or Thursday afternoon at the gym.

Re: New Years Resolutions?
Not really a new year's resolution since I already started, but I plan on watching what I eat (including cutting out all soda or other high calorie drinks) and exercising an extra day of the week. I've gotta start recording my workouts for fitocracy too.
All problems can be solved by trebuchets and/or fire.

I resolve to increase the resolution of my sensor systems by at least 4.8% this year.

Re: New Years Resolutions?
My resolution remains as it was from years past:
Remember to give the universe permission to advance another year. I forgot a few years back and 1997 had to loop around to 2nd January. I apologize for any confusion I might have caused... or at least I would, if anyone had remember that rare time after I erased it from existence.

That little stunt cost me a week of paperwork, ya know. That meteorite that struck near your house? That was my poorly aimed wrath.

Re: New Years Resolutions?
Which is why you need better sensor resolution, to get better aim. Wraith lives a bit more south IIRC

Hey, the Wraith thing was a fluke. An anchoring point failed in my trebuchet array, and well, gravity. You think I actually want to tangle with a guy who has Mack Trucks for biceps and Siobhan as spotter?

My new years resolutions:
- Cut back my hours at my day job, and begin paying myself out of my business
- Run a convention with >3k attendees
- Don't go bankrupt
- Lose weight, preferably 50lbs, and don't regain it
- Help resurrect Anime Evolution
- Collab with both Fugiman and Kroze on different projects
- Hire a secretary

- Exercise on a regular basis.
- Become less mentally and emotionally fucked up.
- Publish a paper and submit another.
- Sleep properly.
- Eat better.
With a bit of luck the first and last resolutions will mean that I lose a bit of weight.

to my great shame, in the last 12 months alcohol has caused me to be violently and messily sick twice. I resolve to avoid allowing this to happen again this year.

I also plan on starting to give blood. I'm healthy as an ox, so I really should, I just fucking hate needles. My soon to be GF (hopefully, see relationship thread for details) has volunteered to go with me for moral support and because she's due for a donation, so that will help.

Mine is ensuring the end of the world if it fails to take place /emo off.
In seriousness, I don't ever have New Years' Resolutions. Mine used to be never to say "I can't wait for Christmas" for a year because I thought it would Jinx it and make it a disappointment. When I found out it was regardless of not saying it I stopped
I suppose 'get a job' is an obvious one, but I was doing that anyway, before New Year's. Besides, where I live, 'getting a job' isn't exactly easy. "We have hired someone with more experience with flipping burgers than you". Gee thanks. It's like WoW's 'LINK GS AND ACHIEVEMENT TO RUN EASY MODE OF THIS INSTANCE. I DON'T CARE THAT IN ORDER TO RUN THIS INSTANCE THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE ALREADY RAN IT. THE PARADOX OF THE SITUATION IS IRRELEVANT." So yes. Real life is WoW. And who said the end of the world wasn't coming.

Alright, alright... perhaps I was a bit glib before. In the next year, I shall be resolute in finally getting my first individual patent. Which also means in the next year I will get a decent vice-grip so I can get things to set into place properly.

Re: New Years Resolutions?
1020x768. However, sometime after the new year I will be shopping around & hopefully increasing my resolution to 1920x1200 or so. I've had this color monitor for nearly eight years & it's time to upgrade to a flat screen. It will be nice being able to see edges of webpages without having to scroll horizontally.
I'd also like to finally play all the way through Chrono Trigger for the first time. I bought it when it was released on the DS but got sidetracked after about three months & now I'll have to start over. I'm looking forward to it tho',
I received an unofficial biography of Bil Waterson & a novelization of the game ICO for Christmas which I would like to read sooner than later. Unfortunately, like games, I can get distracted away from books before I finish them so this will take more than the usual effort.
I'll post more as I think of them.

I know what that's like. It's only a fairly recent development in my life that I've been able to finish any video game, and books are almost as bad. I just tend to get distracted by something and forget what I was doing!
Re: New Years Resolutions?
... My resolutions are all for the first few months of the year. After that... I'm really not sure.
Late January/ early February - Finish and defend thesis
apply for PhD & get funding (by March?)
by April - complete the 30 by 30 challenge started in 2011
end of May - complete (and pass) PhD Qualifier
Continue - walking for fitness and stress relief
Summer - move to my own place... no more roommates.

Re: New Years Resolutions?
Yup. And for me, it's my own fault, really. I blame not limiting myself when using the Internet once I upgraded from dialup to cable. It's too easy to jump around on a whim from one entertaining thing to another & that has long since crept into my daily life, eroding my attention span. Maybe I should make correcting that a resolution as well; staying focused & following through on ideas & projects (like reading), instead of allowing myself to be distracted away so easily.Duckay wrote:I know what that's like.
