Re: SCIENCE!
Alright, so who around here is close enough to beat this person with a readout of all the Wi-Fi signals currently broadcasting into her own home? Or perhaps point out the radio, TV and microwave?

Re: SCIENCE!
The presentation is a little over the top, but it's still a really cool briefing and a nice comeback to those that say NASA doesn't do anything cool anymore.

As I am too cheap to buy fireworks (particularly when it comes to spending the gas necessary to go somewhere that has decent ones), I shall be making these tomorrow.

Re: SCIENCE!
I successfully gave my talk on globular cluster metallicity distibutions. Now I need to work up the nerve to introduce myself to people who might hire me.
Oh and CERN confirmed that they have discovered a boson that likely is the Higgs particle.

Bend the paperclip so there's one leg sticking out. Break off several matchheads. Then put the top of the paperclip leg and the matchheads together on the aluminium foil and fold it around. You now have a much more powerful rocket.

Cross post from the LOL thread, but I think this works here too

Re: SCIENCE!
Two cool SCIENCE! things I read today:
Three radio telescope arrays were linked together for the highest-resolution observation yet of a quasar. The arrays were located in Chili, Hawaii, and Arizona.
Solution to the Pioneer Anomaly, basically confirming theories that the spacecraft are slowing down due to internal heat being radiated off the craft in a non-uniform manner (more heat coming off the front than the back, causing them to slow down).

Re: SCIENCE!
Nice to see Newtonian gravity still works.
I have gotten the referees report back for my paper. The required changes are minor - a few simple calculations and a few textual changes. Hopefully I can have the revised paper back to the journal tomorrow.

Re: SCIENCE!
We submitted another paper the other week to a proceedings paper. Simple, low-impact, but good to have. If this project I'm assisting on pans out as it should, we should be having a really big publication soon.

My paper, 'The SLUGGS Survey: Calcium Triplet-based Spectroscopic Metallicities for Over 900 Globular Clusters' has been accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
A preprint should be on ArXiv on Monday.

Re: SCIENCE!
My paper is now on arXiv:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1207.6402
http://arxiv.org/abs/1207.6402
The SLUGGS Survey: Calcium Triplet-based Spectroscopic Metallicities for Over 900 Globular Clusters
Christopher Usher, Duncan A. Forbes, Jean P. Brodie, Caroline Foster, Lee R. Spitler, Jacob A. Arnold, Aaron J. Romanowsky, Jay Strader, Vincenzo Pota
Although the colour distribution of globular clusters in massive galaxies is well known to be bimodal, the spectroscopic metallicity distribution has been measured in only a few galaxies. After redefining the calcium triplet index-metallicity relation, we use our relation to derive the metallicity of 903 globular clusters in 11 early-type galaxies. This is the largest sample of spectroscopic globular cluster metallicities yet assembled. We compare these metallicities with those derived from Lick indices finding good agreement. In 6 of the 8 galaxies with sufficient numbers of high quality spectra we find bimodality in the spectroscopic metallicity distribution. Our results imply that most massive early-type galaxies have bimodal metallicity, as well as colour, distributions. This bimodality suggests that most massive galaxies early-type galaxies experienced two periods of star formation.

Re: SCIENCE!
So... I'm going to a conference apparently? That's exciting, especially considering I just found out on Friday, and found out this morning that the deadline for abstract submission (if you want to be considered for a talk) was tonight at 9. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
In other news, my paper still hasn't been sent out.
Also, I've been giving increasingly thinking about that idea for a grad school based comedy that was thrown around in the LOLs thread earlier....
Also also, this: http://whatshouldwecallgradschool.tumblr.com/

Re: SCIENCE!
Two papers that I am a coauthor on have been accepted for publication in the last week. One The SLUGGS Survey: NGC 3115, A Critical Test Case for Metallicity Bimodality in Globular Cluster Systems has been accepted in the Astrophysical Journal Letters and the other The SLUGGS Survey: Kinematics for over 2500 Globular Clusters in Twelve Early-type Galaxies has been accepted in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Re: SCIENCE!
I'm measuring taurine levels in energy drinks for my college's research group. But we get like zero budget so we're using an 18 year old HPLC. Once we measure the taurine levels we'll have to find out if those levels have any positive or negative effects they would have by reading medical studies done on it.
Edit: I forgot to add that we will present the results at an ACS meeting in the spring.
