I'll throw in support for my ancestral land, since nobody talks about Finland enough. I will agree, however, that Scandinavia can be somewhat racist due to lack of exposure, but Denmark's got 'em all beat.
On the topic of Canada, though: stop it, Canada! You're ruining all of my childhood plans to escape to Canada once I turn eighteen! I had so much faith in you...

At least we know who is going to be the Canadian Prime Minister on Tuesday unlike Australia.

Watch it, Canada, you're coming close to US levels of corruption there.

Is it wrong that i don't particularly care?
If they looked at MY internetting, i'd just think 'bravo, you wasted your time' and i imagine if they just did random checks alot of it would be wasted. And SOMEONE along the chain of command would have to realize that its alot of money and effort for no results to just blindcheck people.
you'd have to earn yourself a place on some watchlist by being a pedophile in the first place, to actually make them bother checking you.

While that's true, I think the issue here is more about precedent. This will make it easier to push harsher measures through.

Wrong! The government monitors all sorts of people all the time, for any reason they want.
This is the worst kind of apathetic ignorance.

Heck, they did this before the advent personal computers and widespread access to the Internet (one reason why they WANT these broad, unspecified and unregulated power in that medium; they're used to it already)
Good ol' Echelon - it's why I'd preface every international phone call to Zyxst when she was in the U.S. with "Terrorist, cocaine, nuclear, assassin, smuggle, overthow - there; now that we've got some poor schmuck in the NSA listening in, what are you wearing?"

Re: Yo Canada, What's Happening Up There?
I often wonder how many times some poor guy has had to listen in on my phone because I was talking about work. Terrorist, bomb, IED, convoy, injured soldier, attack, guns, cocaine, marijuana... these are every day words for me.

I know some NSA spooks ( I live near Ft. Meade) and they thank God for all the filtering programs that have gone in recently so they don't have to listen to poor schmucks any more. So it's actually a damn robot that does the listening... and as we know robots are great at telling intent and context.

I posted this on the first page.
But bringing it up again because of this. A second call centre, this one with actual people. It's pretty damning. Some 34 ridings may have been affected, all told. And Elections Canada's investigation is still on going.
The Conservatives are claiming that their voters received similar calls as well, now. But as far as anyone can tell, none of them complained to Elections Canada or the media and are only now coming forward when it would be really convenient for the Conservatives.
The Conservative response has been bothersome. They haven't really denied anything. When questioned, they point to some intern/low level staffer and claim it was their doing and no one higher up in the party had any idea, or they just shout ADSCAMADSCAMADSCAM.
Scary times for poor ol' Canada.

I know, it's terrible. I lay awake every night, waiting for the cold knock on the door, for the squads to take me to the prison camps for re-education.

I find wide spread voter suppression to be very scary. I'm sorry you don't agree, apparently?

This is such an ugly mark on our history, and it seems as though no one knows about it. I had an anthropology class in college and out of some ~40 students, I was the only that had any idea. My friend thought it was the same thing as a boarding school.

Start reading Niemöller poetry in bed; I'm sure that'll lull you right to sleep.
But let's get a little perspective here, and why the above "Status Quo Shill" is telling us to be good little obedient slaves to the authority and willingly give away our rights:
Jeff Jarvis wrote:The internet’s not broken.
So then why are there so many attempts to regulate it? Under the guises of piracy, privacy, pornography, predators, indecency, and security, not to mention censorship, tyranny, and civilization, governments from the U.S. to France to Germany to China to Iran to Canada — as well as the European Union and the United Nations — are trying to exert control over the internet.
Why? Is it not working? Is it presenting some new danger to society? Is it fundamentally operating any differently today than it was five or ten years ago? No, no, and no.
So why are governments so eager to claim authority over it? Why would legacy corporations, industries, and institutions egg them on? Because the net is working better than ever. Because they finally recognize how powerful it is and how disruptive it is to their power.
From here.

Theoretically, the NSA and U.S. military aren't allowed to operate on U.S. soil. I know the Europeans and U.K. don't have issues with that, but that's kinda a big deal for the U.S.

The NSA and US military can both full well operate on US soil. It's the CIA that is supposedly not supposed to operate inside of the US's borders.
As far as the military goes, The US Coast Guard is a branch that operates almost solely within the US's borders, while the various National Guard forces and many Reserves are intended to guard within the borders. The Army Corps of Engineers work within the US fairly extensively, as they maintain and build a large amount of our infrastructure (bridges, dams, locks, and other various essential facilities).
As far as the article goes, there's not much actual information that I'm seeing there. "There's a new Senate bill that the ACLU says gives the NSA too much power to spy on US citizens," seems to be the only way that I can paraphrase it.
No, I don't think the NSA needs more power to spy on citizens. They already have the tools they need to spy on citizens, and they don't need probable cause to do it.

The NSA is not supposed to spy on Americans as per Executive Order 12333. However, they can spy on anyone else, so if a foreigner calls someone in the U.S., they have a loophole there. Though they're supposed to get a warrant. LOL warrants!
Does the Army Corps of Engineers and Natty Guard count? The ACoE are construction workers and engineers. NG units are supposedly under the command of state governors. What I meant was the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits regular military units from exercising law-enforcement powers within the U.S. The Coast Guard has been under the Department of Homeland Security since 9/11.
