Yo Canada, What's Happening Up There?

Police can go into your computer any time they want, take anything they want, and no one is allowed to tell you they did?

Sounds like you guys are becoming more like Amerika every day.

...

At least your news organizations still provide something resembling objective in-depth coverage.

A number of rather unfriendly bills have been surfacing up here, and with the Conservatives having a majority government... I'm legitimately scared.

I'd like to. Northern Europe seems like the only place left that has a high concentration of sensible people.

(cue the Swedish coming in to tell us that 99% of people there are idiots as well)

Actually from everything I know about the place, Sweden, Finland and Norway are prettymuch the only places in the world that still have a fairly intelligent population.

It stems from the fact that they are all pseudo-independant. If every one were to just say "Fuck it, we quit, leave us alone." tommorow, they actually could do it. I'm not going to say they could do it easily, but they could collectively survive the process. They have the highest education standards in the world, functioning governments, appropriate taxes and they ask from their people no more than is neccissary, but they ask that for the right issues rather than our more aimless "This pays us best, fuck it, we'll ask the people to conform and force them to as well."

And due to all this, and many more reasons, these three countrys, possibally the only three in the world are capable of accepting, understanding and if all else fails, just plain tollerating of other peoples, cultures, religions, sexualitys, you name it. While there may be a small very loud part of each that objects to anything other than what they like, it is exactly that, a very small, very loud bunch of idiots. Where as the average person isn't infact going to discriminate against us for not speaking their language (initially.) or for having any other differences to them.

My god I rant about these places way too much... I should probably get around to writing some of my assignments for VCAL soon...

That's funny, because I just had a conversation with someone about how their experience in Sweden taught them, for all of Sweden's social programs & etc., they also harbour tremendous racism.

I wonder are the Nordic countries that great or do they just have a good press agent?

Im convinced their 100% adult literacy is less a result of everyone being able to read but more of a result of no one being able to do math. Turns out, HORRIBLE school system but they have one guy who is good at fudging numbers ;)

Unsurprising, considering that those countries have populations that are extremely uniform culturally, racially. Take Sweden: 85% of the people living in the country are Swedes, and 5% are Finns. 78% belong to the Church of Sweden, though only one-fifth describe themselves as believiing in god. >90% of the country speaks Swedish. Immigration is extremely low.

A lot of the "problems" that the US and Canada have faced since their inception have never been confronted by Sweden.

I don't want to knock their secular, socialist utopia... but they've kind of had an "advantage" in some ways. It's a lot easier to make decisions when everyone agrees about everything and everyone has a similar point of view.

Then again... that's liable to cause problems in some situations....

Harper! *shakes fist*

Pretty soon they'll (try to) attach such provisions to government grants as well... which is basically ALL scientists in Canada.

We are so fucked.

And the worst part is that many of the people I try to tell about it ... deny that it's happening, stating that they think it's just a bunch of people twisting the government's words to suit their own agenda and that the Conservatives can do no wrong. "I doubt that's actually the case" "You're making it out to be worse than it is" and so on. Or they just ignore it.

EDIT: And it's just so ... unsubtly wrong as well! I mean, associating it with "protecting the children"? Really? It's like I'm reading this out of a poorly-written political novel. Or they're all Scooby Doo villains.

I wouldn't say immigration to Sweden is not "extremely low" we have the fourth highest amount of asylum seekers in Europe, not to mention that immigration has had quite the impact on our culture. And to say we harbour "tremendous racism" is more than a little offensive...

On Topic: Was this the same deal of laws that prompted someone to say "either you're with us, or you're with the paedophiles" (or someting to that effect)? If so, that's a huge load of bollocks.

Sorry, man - we haven't been cool in AGES; I've just about given up on trying to speak up against the rampant injustice bubbling over in the Ottawa crock-pot. My voice was too little, and now it's far too late. It's a fait accompli that we've seen already play out south of the border:

A conservative puppet of selfish and greedy (and staggeringly short-sighted) interests is going to dismantle and weaken the country, things are going to go to absolute librarian poo by the time that 'Steve-O' decides his time is up, and then some poor honourable schmuck is gonna win the election over Harper's successor only to be left holding the bag, unable to remedy what ails the Dominion and basically be vilified by even his/her own supporters.

Despite my defeatist cynicism and fatalism I'm curious - are the Cons STILL gonna illegally call The Government of Canada "The Harper Government" when Smilin' Steve retires and they have an interim PM up to the next election?

I hope the fuckwits that voted conservative for no reason other than being sick of having to vote all the time are starting to realize just how fuckwitted that was.

A lot of them are doing that! It's part of why Ontario's Liberals won another government. Well, that and Rob Ford but that's a different (and even more hilarious) matter.

In related news, everyone probably know this by now but the Conservatives may have hired a company to harass and confuse voters in close ridings during the election.

Matt? You have much more faith and hope in our fellow Canadians than I do; I doubt any of the Con-supporters will EVER allow their very human egos to admit the above; they may change parties, they may start to vilify their former idols, but they will NEVER ever acknowledge their fault in letting MORE and more termites into the House of Government.

*shrug*

Me? I fall prey to the same psychological self-defense mechanism; I voted NDP in my riding, and kept Jack Harris in his seat...BUT I'm sure there's more I could have done to sway people from voting for the Cons, yet I can't think of any specifics offhand... :(

I sure hope so, "never forget" and all that.

And to answer someone above, yes vic toews has called pretty much everyone in this thread a supporter of child pornography.
Should be legal to punch people in the mouth for that.

Maybe he just secretly hated the bill but couldn't go against harper and thought this was the best way to bring it down in a shit storm? Given "never attribute to malice what you can attribute to stupidity" it seems that cleverness and stupidity should have the same relation, so that seems unlikely. Perhaps its better from a stress perspective to think of him as heroic rather than a raving jackass though, since we can't actually do anything about him.

I apologize. I definitely did NOT mean to imply that all Swedes or Sweden in general harbours racism as a national policy. I think Swedish people are some of the coolest, nicest, smartest people on the planet.

What I was so clumsily trying to say that it is unsurprising that someone could experience racism in a nation that has traditionally been fairly uniform and the country has only started to confront dramatic immigration in the past twenty or thirty years (whereas the United States has been racist against its immigrants for the last 200 years, in particular around the turn of the century.) Very few European countries were as uniform as Norway, Sweden, and Finland as of 1970-1980, due in part to geography and the countries' traditions of political neutrality.

Graph of Swedish immigration: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Invandrare_utvandrare_Sverige_1850-2007.svg

Note the sharp uptick in immigration in the early nineties, and then again in the late 2000s.

Graph of United States immigration http://www.thepelicanpost.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Immigration_to_the_US_graph.png

Basically what I'm saying is Sweden has arrived at the immigration party fairly late in the game. This has some boons (they haven't felt the tension and disagreements that multiculturalism can bring and have managed to create some of the most outstanding social programs in the world) and some challenges (adapting to new cultures is ALWAYS difficult for a country, and usually incites a fair amount of racism, part of the reason why the United States has been and, in many ways, still is, so racist).

Listen, I am more of fan of my country than others, but the idea that a Canadian government can look south and go "Yes, that... let's do more of that" is utterly mind-boggling. Dammit, northerners! We sprung that trap and you walked into it anyway!
