Can you list off a few that you have already seen and liked? Then it would be easier to recommend something similar.

Are you in the US or the UK? Because the UK has a patheticly small anime collection. It does have Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex though (both seasons, 26 episodes each) which is really good. (well, the first season is fantastic, the second one's merely good)

@ Psyclone
While I can enjoy a long running series like Bleach and Case Closed, I generally don't want it going past around 75 episodes at most.
@ Tapir12
Well let's see I have watched quite a bit in my past, but so far on Netflix I've watched:
Angel Beats (Loved)
Highschool of the Dead (So much fanservice, too much at some point)
Claymore (Pretty cool)
Trigun (Loved)
Fruits Basket (It was nice)
Soul Eater (At my little bros suggestion, and so much hatred for Black Star)
Baka and Test (I liked, reminded me sort of a high school version of Scott Pilgrim in a sense)
Black Butler (Not bad, am waiting for season 2)
Gurren Lagann (Loved, Kamina is Boss)
Clannad, and After Story (Pretty good, the Big Dango Family song got stuck in my head)
and Hetalia (Funny, if not short)
Hope that might help a bit

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (has the subs on Hulu)

Oh, and Cowboy Bebop!

Yeah I've watching brotherhood on Adult Swim (I'm generally a dub guy if I can find it, but that's just me), but I do have plans to watch Cowboy Bebop.

I don't know if it's on there, but if it is, Revolutionary Girl Utena is amazing. Listening to the premise (girl is consolled by a prince when her parents die, grows up wanting to be a prince and has sword duels at school for the Rose Bride), I thought I wouldn't like it. Then I watched it and was blown away.

A couple suggestions:
- Death Note (obligatory recommendation)
- Baccano! (fast paced and a lot of fun)
- Seirei no Moribito (very good story and awesome characters)
- Monster (epic)

A couple I haven't seen but have heard good things about:
- Code Geass
- Black Lagoon

EDIT: And Gungrave

Yes to both.

Also, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry) , and Durarara!

They're both 24 or so episodes, I think, not counting Higurashi's OVAs and DRR's 'spoof' episodes.

Black lagoon, it’s really good and short enough to be over soon.
higurashi no naku koro ni (or just higurashi) is VERY good but ONLY if you like horror and don't plan on sleeping.
If I'm half-mad, then which do you think I consider my better half?

Yeah...

See, I had the misfortune of glimpsing one of the final episodes over the shoulder of a friend, and was confounded by the bizarreness of her lesbian lover turning into a motorcycle and them speeding through psycho dreamplanes and whatnot, so I simply wrote it off as too weird for me to invest time in. Which is why your description of it further confounds me - you make it sound almost normal.

I somehow managed to sleep through that Shion/Mion scene from the 5th arc. Oddly enough, I think that series has only caused one dream I would call a 'nightmare'.

Thats because you have a blood fetish
Also, one NETFLIX, I'd recommend Chrome Steel Regios, Kenichi the mightiest disciple, Darker than black, elfen lied, Mushi-shi, trinity blood, blood+, Monster (if you like psychological horror), ouran high school host club, vandread, and desert punk. should keep you occupied for a while

Of the top of my head, I think the bloodiest I've seen, apart from Higurashi, is Elfen Lied.

"My blood cries out for the vengeance of my people's blood! Which can only be repaid with TWICE as much blood! Or maybe THREE times as much blood! Like, if you went to HELL and it was FULL of blood! And that blood was ON FIRE! And it was RAINING blood! Then maybe THAT would be enough blood!

Ehhh... but probably not."

I didn't think of Hellsing, mainly because I haven't seen much of it. A lot of the bits I have seen were pretty bloody.

I'm just going to reiterate that Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a must see for any self-respecting anime fan. If you've never seen it, see that this problem is rectified.

On top of SAC I'd also recommend Spice and Wolf, Great Teacher Onizuka, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent and Elfen Lied. The latter I only recommend based on the music and it's ability to create a mood and atmosphere. The actual writing is... meh...

ohhhhh, hellsing... yeah THERE is a good one
But there are two of those now
like fullmetal alchemist where they caught up with the manga that was not done yet and just made their own ending and then another series, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood came out, following the now ended manga to the end so did hellsing
WATCH hellsing ultimate (or OVA) is a GRAND series, where the blood flows more than Elfen Lied or higurashi, its GLORIUS
I STILL can't watch it without grinning all the way
If I'm half-mad, then which do you think I consider my better half?

Regarding Paranoia Agent, pretty much anything by Satoshi Kon is good. Paprika is one of my favorite films.

I only found the first 4 episodes to be creepy, but the torture scene later on did have me go: that's a bit far.

Anime I would recommend but not sure if it is available on Netflix:

Sky Girls
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Mobile Police Patlabor (47 part series)
Patlabor OVA 1 & 2
New Dominion Tank Police
Bubblegum Crisis 2032
Pani Poni Dash

Pani Poni Dash, Dominion and Patlabor are nice comedies.

Yeah, I think the first arc definitely had the creepiest moments out of all of them. The others are more disturbing or confusing; the ending of the second arc left me wondering for a while.

That said, I think the second-last arc had the most soul-crushing scene I've ever seen anywhere.
