The Fanfiction Thread
Because I've noticed a couple people recently mentioning that they read and/or write fanfiction, and I thought it would be cool to have a place on the forum to talk about it. So yeah. What are your favorite fandoms? OTPs? What name do you post under? Any good recs? What's your best piece?
Or hey, feel free to just throw peanuts.
So I'm Sossity, to get the ball rolling. Right now, I'm heavily into the Due South and Twin Peaks fandoms, although I haven't finished any Twin Peaks yet. I'm much more of a reader than a writer, but I haven't had a lot of time to do either at the moment, which makes me sad.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
Desert Bus slash fics are my true love.
Seriously though, and not to derail the thread before it even gets started, but what do you think of this? From the criticisms being directed at it, it sounds like just mediocre fan fiction with terrible pacing and a plot shoehorned in to make it not seem like just porn. On the other hand, I find the idea of suburban housewives discovering erotica to be very entertaining.
It should be noted that I have not even read a summary of this book and most likely have no idea what I'm talking about.

See my earlier comment RE: true love. Other than that, though, still my favorite fanfic of all time. Though it's better when acted out.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
My fan fiction is mostly just DB Slash lemon fics, so I'm not going to link to them. It frightens me a bit that I find it so easy to write slash, though.

I'm still inappropriately happy that I got someone on the forums to write Alja/Future Alja/Past Alja/Richard Nixon shipping.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
So. I've been reading the bible quite a bit for a research paper I'm doing. And I'm getting this increasingly strong urge to read and/or write bible fanfiction. Nothing slashy (well. Maybe a bit. But I am researching homosexual relationships in the bible, so I think that's fair) but... I feel like it's horribly blasphemous. Maybe I should just... put the Old Testament down for a bit. David/Jonathan furevurrrrr

My reaction to that would be um.... nope. For one thing, Jonathan and David were both married. Several times in David's case at least.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. You cannot deny their love!
It's actually a thing, though. People who know these things (biblical scholars specializing in reading into seemingly straight relationships, I guess?) generally say that along with David and Jonathan; Ruth, Naomi, that one centurion in Matthew, and possibly (because the other ones are all completely plausible) Jesus and John could have been in gay relationships. It's all based on analyzing the Greek word choice.
It's mostly in an effort to find biblical evidence that God is okay with gay people, and it's mostly gay Christians looking into it, but I think it's pretty interesting. And you have to admit, if it were true, it would be pretty adorable. In a horribly tragic, repressed sort of way.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
This isn't really the place to get into this discussion but I don't deny their love. The hebrew word used is "ahab" which means having affection for, sexually or otherwise. The same word is used between Abraham and Isaac, who were father and son, and also when Isaac asks for a particular food that he loves.
(Reference: This)
The problem with all English translations is that we have one word which can be used as translation for several original words, for example in the greek there are three words translated "love" - eros, philios and agape. The first is the love (or desire) for a man towards a woman (hence erotic), the second is the companionship between two friends and the third is the unconditional love which only God can truly show.
Besides, David worshipped the God of Israel, and would have lived by the law given in the first five books of the Old Testament, part of which expressly forbids homosexual relationships.
But yes you're right it's mostly people trying to read into things that aren't necessarily there.
Right I think I've alienated enough people now. Who's up for some Leverage fanfiction?

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
Well, they do try and rationalize that.
I don't actually care about their relationship, it's just sort of intriguing. Plus, I looked, and all there seems to be is Jesus/Judas. So, you know.
I haven't watched Leverage. Should I?

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
At last check I have a couple of stories laying around on FF.Net that were written for Mass Effect.
At one point I think I was planning on doing a novelization of sorts as an exercise to sharpen my writing skills, but losing a good chunk of work thanks to a computer crash kind of threw the breaks on that.

..For some reason I had the weird impression that Leverage was some sort of reality show about poker players. Yeah, I can't explain it either. The real thing looks really interesting, though! That shall be fun.
And heeee Alja/Past Alja/Future Alja/Richard Nixon. Still wish I had been able to work in the beaver and the chocolate pudding.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
So, my sister has apparently discovered fanfiction. Which is fine. However, from what I can tell, the stories she reads are absolutely terrible. And now she wants to share them with me. The conversation went like this:
Her: do you know what fanfiction is?
Me: Huh? Yeah, why?
Her: well there's this really good Harry Potter story I want you to read-
Me: you read fanfic?
Her: yeah, it's about Harry's parents, so Lily and her best friend who's this sort of pixie person and their adventures.
Me: well, uh, I'm pretty busy these days. Maybe after school lets out?
Fortunately, she's 14 and (as far as I know) only reads gen and possibly T-rated canon pairings. I don't even want to think about what will happen when she discovers slash.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
I can't really say that's her fault. A lot of fanfiction really is terrible. Sometimes you do get some really good ones but they are few and far between.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
Still, I feel like she should ate say be aware of the quality of what she's reading. I think if you're going to read a lot of fanfiction you have to lower your standards a bit, but she honestly doesn't realize how awful it is. Like, at least one word per sentence is misspelled or missing a letter or something like that.

Re: The Fanfiction Thread
Ouch. Yeah, I suppose a certain amount of mental scarring comes standard with fanfiction reading. Poor kid.
HP's not one of the fandoms I'm really into, so I don't know a lot of the resources out there, but there's this list of gen recs. I wish she had included ratings, but the fics themselves seem pretty good.
