Legend of Korra!

Postby JustAName » 24 Mar 2012, 00:22

The long-awaited sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender is finally here! Korra officially starts next month, but through a social media campaign of getting a certain number of likes, etc., Nick unlocked the first two episodes early. They are viewable here: http://www.korranation.com/

Ah, but not if you use a proxy and go watch it on the Nick site.

A proxy, for example, like one from the 10 Recently Tested list to the right of this page. ;)

Because that's what I'll be doing, later. :D

I used Stealthy, since it was blocked for canada.

Worked like a charm.

I can say this:

What made avatar: the last airbender truly great, remains present in Legend of Korra.

My hope is that many cabbages are destroyed along the way.

Yeah, it does that because you're not in the US. It was doing it to me until I tried what Dreamer suggested; use Stealthy.

Never watched the original series, but took a peek at this, skipped roughly halfway into that first episode, landed myself in a pretty awesome action sequence.

The animation is stellar, the character designs beautiful, great voice work (I swear I heard Batou in there), and the story was immediately accessible and understandable. I knew exactly who everyone was, even though I'd never seen any of the characters and I dropped myself into the episode halfway in. And the best part? Awesome female lead.

Curious to know, do I need to watch the original series before this one? Or will a passing knowledge of the events of the first suffice?

You don't NEED to, after all the opening for this series spoils the ending for the first, but... It's so good. You'd only be doing yourself a favor if you watched it.

That's because the specific 'element' of bending seems to be learned via the surrounding culture.

The Fire Country only had Fire Benders, even with intermarrying in from 'the colonies'. Aang and Katara's children were brought up in the Air Nomad tradition, and became air-benders.

So it's a nurture over nature thing, with the surrounding culture being what affects the 'element', and because Republic City is a blended multi-cultural place, two brothers can be different element benders.

Oh god... I'm developing fannon for a TV series that hasn't even started yet...

That was pretty bussing entertaining. I gotta say I had some doubts at the start of the first episode but once they got underway it was pretty damn good.

The line: "I will make no such promises" had me cracking up quite badly. (I have 2 nieces who can deadpan that sort of response perfectly. And they were quite the handful when they hit puberty.)

So I took the time and watched the full "two" episodes in the link and gotta say, it holds up. Looks great, sounds great, flows great.

In particularly, I'm impressed with the snappy pacing. Nothing lags, nothing hangs, it all just goes about it's business very quickly and very neatly. The story develops naturally and believably, and it packs in a great mix of character development and action. I never felt it was moving slowly, and I was always interested to see what happened next.

I suppose we'll see if that pace can be maintained throughout the full series. Definitely will be watching this.

Alja: I know that pace can be maintained.

How?

Because it's the same as from Avatar the Last Airbender.

Seriously, that show was amazing, and this is just as amazing, so WATCH IT.

Saw the first episode when it leaked a few weeks back, now I got to see the second and I'm very excited. I really like them playing up the modernism versus tradition argument even more and the troubling notions behind innate ability. And they've really got their animation down to a beautiful science. I do wonder though how the book naming scheme is going to continue, as future books wouldn't seem to be based around the mastering of an element like the last series was.

I'm guessing this series will stand very well on its own, but you're missing out on an absolutely immense amount if you haven't watched the original series.

The original series was just as good as this one is. The fights are just as spectacular. The character development just as good. I highly, highly recommend you watch the original series ASAP.

I watched the episodes again today. HURGGNNNNNNGGGG SO GOOOOOOD. AUGH. I cannot wait for more of this.
