Sadly Geoff_B I do not think either sodium bicarbonate or carbonic acid in the concentrations encountered in club soda have that large an effect on the thermodynamic properties of water.

You are just throwing bad tasting, slightly salty water on Elomin Sha. All you are doing is making him angry.

Oh.... yeah... that stuff too. Ok lets calculate this out then. The specific heat of water(Since club soda's should be about the same) is 4.186 joules/ gram*C, waters boiling point is 100 C so that makes it 418.6 joules, and Geoff has a 1 liter bottle of club soda so that makes it 418.6 kJ. And the Enthalpy of vaporization of water is 40.65kJ/ per mole. 1 liter of water is 55.55 moles. So that brings the energy total to about 2677kJ.... now we just need to measure the energy of Elomin's fire.... okay we can stop this now. Lets go back to trying not to make sense of this thread.

Frankly, I don't know why you were trying to make sense of it in the first place.

Assuming Elomin uses standard Parafin oil (HHV=46.00 MJ/kg) for his flame thrower he needs to burn only 2.677/46=0.05kg of the stuff to generate enough heat. Lets say he's "accidentally" very sloppy in applying the flame and he gets only 10% on target. That means he needs to shoot roughly 0.5 kg of parafin oil to vaporize all that club soda. Parafin oil has a density of roughly 0.8 kg/l so he needs roughly 0.625 liters of oil. Factoring in a flow rate of about 0.5 liters of oil per second from the flame thrower and this equates to a squeeze of 1.25 seconds on the trigger.

I think Elomin has this one in the bag

PS: Yeah I know he would probably use Napalm B but I couldn't find the propper HHV values. Those would be higher anyway, so he would win even faster

Hmm, that bubble like thing on my stomach wasn't there before. I'm feeling tired now, and for some reason I want to eat my fist. I'm going to lie down over here. *crawls to corner and giggles*

Or he could use magnesium. It burns in water, just saying.

Suggestions for shopping list: Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium. Stuff that explodes in water ;) (Ordered by smallest to biggest reaction)

I recommend potassium from Kazakhstan. All other countries have inferior potassium.
