Re: The Avengers
They could have just made it smaller. A mobile tactical command center that also can launch a handful of aircraft, instead of super-carrier sized. That would have been fine. But they were operating on a scale that is practically geological.
Now, I'm not trying to make a fuss out of a movie based off of a comic book, because as I said, suspension of disbelief, it's kinda to be expected with this sort of thing. But this was just so far out there it, it was like having the fourth wall suddenly and inexplicably shattered by Hitler popping up on screen in a thong, singing Bad Romance. It jarred me out of the movie so badly I had to walk out of the theatre, get a drink of water, and count to 60 before I could go back in.

I stand by it looking cool. Hardly a new concept either, even in scale. Yes, it was silly. So was the movie. It fit well, to me.

Re: The Avengers
If you say so. I personally found it dull to look at, even putting aside the flabbergast inducement.
I also don't quite agree that it was silly, nor was the movie. Monty Python is silly. Bugs Bunny is silly. Most of this film was funny, not silly. And the carrier for me slipped into the surreally absurd, but not quite into full blown stupid.
But again, not trying to convince anyone, not trying to make a fuss.

Re: The Avengers
In the establishing shot for Black Widow's first scene a train goes past a Russian language billboard. The Black Widow is supposed to be in Russia yet the locomotives are quite clearly North American (most likely Norfolk Southern). I was going to comment on this to my friends but then a flying aircraft carrier showed up.
Being a comic book movie, The Avengers has plenty of things that do not make sense.
And damn you Master Gunner for linking me to TV Tropes.

Basically this. It looked almost absolutely accurate to the comics, too.
Gunner, the illustration image on the page you linked is the craft in question; just a slightly different interpretation of it.

I think the intention was to direct readers to the "Real Life" section. Point being that such a thing has been tried before, dumb as it may sound.
At any rate, I'd agree that 1) introducing the straight-up SHIELD Helicarrier to the film continuity was a good way to please the fans and 2) it's a movie with a regenerating rage monster, a physical god, a superthin suit of flight-capable powered armor, a shield that absorbs all vibrations while somehow making a loud *bong* noise, and a strong acting performance by Scarlett Johannsson.
So, you hit it on the head, really. Belief must be suspended.

Plus, the Helicarrier allowed for the best silent joke in the movie ("10 bucks says you will")
"I wouldn't call myself an evil genius. Simply genius will suffice."

Also, this movie has a guy who turns into a green giant. Someone claiming to be a Norse god. A totally impractical robotic suit of armour. And a shield that defies all physical laws about friction.

I'd love to make a really long fan-argument post... but I'm on my way out to see the movie for my second time, but this time in IMAX
Sadly, that means a 2 hour busride.

Seriously people, how many times do I have to say that 1) yes, I expected to, and did, have to suspend my disbelief and 2) I wasn't trying to make a fuss.
You can all stop chiming in about how wrong I am now, especially considering that particular conversation ended a day ago.

Back on track: is it worth it to see in 3D? My sister and I saw it Friday and she's itching to see it again, in IMAX this time, but we've never seen a live-action 3D movie so we're kind of hesitant.

No, it really isn't. The 3D wasn't bad by any means, but it was hardly needed to make the movie any better. Course I didn't see it in IMAX. But it isn't really the movie that can justify 3D for anything beyond squeezing some extra money out of it in my opinion.

Re: The Avengers
Seeing it in 3D was the only thing I didn't like about it, as it turns out my eyes really don't like "3D" movies. I ended up watching most of the climax without the 3D glasses, as I could actually see what was going on better without them than with them. Results likely not typical, however.

Re: The Avengers
Just finished seeing it. While I admit there are probably flaws in the movie overall when you break it down into segments, all I care about at the moment is how the movie came across as a whole work of art.
And buddy, let me just say that that was a work of art. A destructive, gargantuan, flashy, witty, sexy, fucking jaw-droppingly fantastic work of art.
Fucking. Awesome.

Re: The Avengers
So I saw it today and it was awesome. Probably the best summer blockbuster I have seen and a totally FU to the Nolan "it's gotta be real" superhero playbook.
Anyways, after seeing the in credit bonus scene I got to thinking about Loki's staff... (spoiler)
Considering that Thanos gave it to him, its size, shape, colour, and powers could that gem on the end not have been the mind Infinity Gem? Other than his Death fixation it could give Thanos another reason to attack Earth?
I can't lie... I was in tears. Really.

Since I can't seem to find the appropriate hex code to make text invisible, my response is below.
I know Wheedon has to kill someone important off, but why did it have to be Coulson? Why couldn't it be someone I wasn't invested in? ><

The infinity gauntlet showed up at SDCC a couple years back among marvel film props, and also showed up among the various relics in Asgard in Thor.
It seems pretty likely they'll go for the gauntlet as the mcguffin in Avengers 2.

I found the 3D a bit blurry, going to try to rewatch in 2D this week.
