I think we could do with avoiding discussing pornography in relation to other masturbatory aids because there is a definite moral objection that can be made to the way the sex industry is run. It adds grey areas into an already sticky (pun intended) issue.

I personally don't see the problem with masturbatory aids (aside from porn), but there is a clear social stigma attached to them, especially for men. I think the reason for that is that it's considered somehow naughty and perhaps even filthy - apparently society still has a very Victorian outlook on sex. From a male perspective, the idea of a woman using a sexual aid is quite sexy, but for a man it's a bit weird. Oddly, men masturbating seems pretty normal, but somehow when you stick something else in there then it becomes weird - although I don't view male masturbation as sexy in the same way that I view female masturbation as sexy.. I don't know if the same is true for women, or whether the patriarchal nature sexual discourse means that it is socially taboo for men to use sex aids, but not women.

Perhaps the issue here is that women are more likely to be objectified than men, so a sexual aid becomes less a means of enhancing pleasure as a means of enhancing sexuality and sexual appeal.

It's interesting that in my experience people more willingly accept the concept of men masturbating in general than women, but more willingly accept women masturbating with sexual aids than men.

Of course I once had to have an awkward discussion with a client about how it was fine if she wanted to "make herself feel good" but that it was unsafe and inappropriate to use a carrot for that purpose and she ought to use something designed for it...

I do youth work. Conversations like that kind of come with the territory to an extent when you're working with kids who don't have permanent guardians and for whom you're the closest thing they have to a supportive adult... but yeah, talk about awkward. But of course, the rub is if you make it obvious that you're awkward about it, the poor kid just ends up mortified and doesn't really take any of it in.

(I mean, there's always going to be a certain level of embarrassment and awkward, but...)
