The Word Weavers Corner

Postby Fenrir » 27 May 2012, 00:41

Because we seem to have a thread for pretty much EVERYthing else on the forum....

So, aside from the obvious people (i.e. Tim etc.) - who among us writes? Be it original fiction, fan fiction .... hell, I suppose even roleplayers are technically writers to a certain extent. Anyone who uses writing as a medium to tell a story then.

Post here and let folks know!

I currently have two stories on FictionPress.com, one of which (The Vitaris Insurrection) is linked in my sig.
Here's the description on FictionPress:
"A collaboration between myself and a friend. A Terran Marine outpost on Vitaris is suddenly attacked by what are believed to just be rebels. A Terran Commonwealth Navy force sent to investigate discovers that there may be larger powers at work."

I feel it's in need of an overhaul, but I've never really been bothered to go do it, partially due to lack of feedback. I also have a couple of other story ideas that I haven't done much on, save for a few notes and a couple of character drawings.

The second story I have on FP is basically a stupid little one-shot based on The Vitaris Insurrection, but has nothing whatsoever to to with the actual storyline.

The Vitaris Insurrection, The Outbreak (The latter not written by me, but I am in it.)

@ PH - Sounds interesting. May have to give it a look over at some point. If I do I'll be sure to leave you some feedback (either here or there). It always sucks when you really want constructive crit. on a piece you've done and no one bothers to give it.

@ Geoff - Wheee, CHEESE! Also, you had me at 'Leverage' ;)

At the minute most of my creative writing revolves around the Guild Wars universe. It's not what I personally would consider 'Fan Fiction' since it's an entirely original cast, plots etc. set within the Guild Wars universe but I suppose that's a matter of opinion. Good litmus test for that sort of thing (in my opinion) is asking yourself 'Could I take these characters out of this universe, place them in another and still have them be pretty much the same character?'.

Anyway, the majority of my stuff can be viewed here - http://www.windridersguild.co.cc/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=305 - there's cheesy sap, MxM cheesy sap but nothing that's NSFW. Some pieces REALLY ought to get a rewrite at some point but time restraints and working out characters, plot etc. for Guild Wars 2 have kind of kept me from it. Also I started a lot of this when I was in my teens so I hadn't really figured out plot etc. til the last couple of years.

I'm also in the process of generating some ideas for an entirely original piece of fiction that would actually involve the characters that I've birthed (for lack of a better way of putting it) within Guild Wars. The world itself would be entirely original (Yay, world building) and the majority of the cast would be renamed but the basic character traits etc. would still be more or less the same. It's also one of the reasons why I love doing the writing I do at present - it allows me to test out plot device ideas, character concepts and all that loveliness.

I've been writing a contemporary fantasy novel but... I'm just not motivated at the moment, I've written a few chapters and as you've all noticed my grammar is atrocious so it needs a through overhaul.

What's the premise of the novel? If you don't mind my asking. And heh, my grammar isn't exactly brilliant either but then I'm dyslexic so....guess I have some excuse.

I wrote a few short stories. Here is one of them:

As they yelled "surprise!", I wished I was wearing pants.

Some of them are longer than that, too. Haven't written in a while, though.

I have written a few lemon slashfics, primarily about people in the DB chat. That's about the extent of my writing portfolio.

Did... Did you...

Did you just rule 34 yourself?

I'm pretty sure that rule 34 states that if you find something that does not exist you are obliged to make it, by drawing attention to it you have forced Gunner's hand?

None to blame but thyself.

Ok, so ... in order to avoid things derailing more than they're already kinda beginning to - since this is a thread regarding writing, do you folks have any writers you particularly admire? If so, who are they and why do you admire them?

Because he wrote Dune.

It's like getting blood out of a stone with me here.

Zahn because he created his own mythology within Star Wars with his Empire trilogy which shaped the EU and populated it with new stories.

Tolkien. Nothing else needs to be said, just; Tolkien.
