Re: The depressing depression thread
I kinda hate New Year. I feel that I haven't done half of what I set out to do at the start of the year and I can't see how things are going to change for the better

Re: The depressing depression thread
Well if you want to cheat you could just use the Chinese New Year and give yourself two extra months.
But in all seriousness, you just have to remember that bad times don't last forever. Don't worry if you don't accomplish the things you wanted to do this year, since there is always another year/time.
My university tutor told me when I dropped Japanese language, because I found it too hard, that he stopped learning it twice before finally being able to be fluent. One of my goals is too learn Japanese, but I did manage to do it this year or last year, but I will do it one year!
Essentially what I'm trying to say is don't worry too much if you didn't manage to accomplish what you set out to do this year since there is always the future. ^__^
(BTW, I don't blame you if you didn't find that at all motivating, but I tried my best.)

Re: The depressing depression thread
The more I think about work the more depressed I get. I graduated from my program last April and haven't gotten a job yet. At first I was optimistic, but the more time passes, the more I feel horrible about it. I feel like no one will ever hire me because my work is no good, and I'm embarrassed to show my face to anyone I went to school with because they all have jobs in the field already. It's gotten to the point where other people are telling me I'm wasting my diploma and I'll be stuck working part-time jobs for the rest of my life. They ask why I don't have a job yet and why I'm still working retail. At first I felt horrible because I kept telling myself I'm a failure, but now it's even worse with everyone else saying the same thing to me.

It might suck to do so, but I don't think it would hurt your chances to talk to the guys you know who DID get a job. It might be that you are not worse than those guys at "your job" just how you manage to sell yourself.

Re: The depressing depression thread
The other advice I'd give is to make a small portfolio of your work and effectively spam every company you know who has something to do with computer animation and ask them to give you a chance. The worse they can give you is a "We're not interested."
But what Dutch said is also good advice, most of the jobs I've got is from people vouching on my behalf to the person who hires the people. It's unfair to know people like that which gives you an advantage in getting a job but that's just the way the world works.
And just one last thing I've just thought of, publish your things on the net. If people see what you do and go "Oh cool, I want them to do something for me!" then BAM! You've got some work in your field of study. ^__^

For everyone who has suffered with their monsters during 2012, I offer this as a completely irrelevant comment that I like to hold on to: "Tough times don't last. Tough people do"

Weird people are usually interesting; if not for the people themselves, then for what happens around them

Re: The depressing depression thread
Fair enough. I had exactly the same situation a few months ago; I never really got any practice when I was younger at making friends so I always found it kinda tricky, and I'd spent about a year and a half trying to ingratiate myself into one particular social group of nerds. Trouble is, I started to realise over time that I actually got on with each of them about 20% of the time, and the longer I spent with them the more I realised how exclusive and egotistical they were, how little they actually had in common with me and how little I actually enjoyed spending time with them. But they were the only social group I could readily interact with, plus they included the one person I could reliably turn to for moral support, and who was (and probably still is) my best friend. I hardly ever got to speak to her, and our conversation didn't flow quite so well as time went by, but she was about the best I'd got.
In the end, I just dropped it; detached myself from that group near-entirely and only talked to my friend via Facebook, and even then only on occasion. About two months of isolation later, broken only by rugby (which proved something of a social lifeline), I picked another group to try and fit in with based about 80% on the fact that it was convenient, time-wise, to spend time with them. This was about three months ago; I'm still on the outskirts of the group, and there's arguably even less I have in common with them. But they're a nice bunch, pretty friendly, I can talk to them, and all is due to change in the next few months anyway.
That wasn't really any kind of moral support, I just felt the need to share my own experience. Helpful?

That feeling when you over committed yourself and then have to back out of obligations.
Oh yeah. Love that guilt.
