I am so incredibly hungry that I need a good meal. But actually cannot be arsed cooking. Back problems, fatigue, chest problems and FUCK standing in that kitchen for a good half hour cooking.

Just wonder if I can wrangle a chair down stairs and, more importantly, back up stairs.

And like they say in the porn industry, time for a good, long fuck.

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

If the rules of this thread are to work at all, one other rule needs to be established: the "cool-off period" rule. The rule is how long one must go before venting on something that is the antithesis of something that someone else has vented on. Without this rule, one could simply respond to someone else's vent without quoting it and say that they're not discussing the matter, they are simply venting their own issue; which actually does happen (recent events being a good example - I have vented about my position on the matter more than once in the past).

Of course that then bring up the problem of people having to read every vent that has occurred during the cool-down period in order to ensure their post is compliant.

I have a bad cold, which means because of other health issues, I'm now falling asleep every six hours. Woo.

I think this house is cursed or some shit now.

Grandmother in hospital, Grandfather gets cold, and now Brett goes to dry clothes at laundrette, 7 hours ago. Universe has picked other targets apparently.

I really want to be in a band.
Unfortunately, I also want to be in a band with people who I know and aren't wanting to make friendships cold-turkey, as I am crap at that sort of thing. I'm better at making friends with people who get integrated with the 'group' I'm in.

Even if I wasn't a socialphobe, the type of Band I want to be in don't seem to acknowledge the potential of the instrument I play (I also don't want to bend and play the desired instrument). They all seek "Vocialists", "Drummers", "Guitarists" "Bassists" and sometimes "Keyboardists". There's no casting call for "Anything"; where my Violin could be relevant.

You can argue that if I don't turn up with my violin and show them, I'll never know. But given that they aren't looking for one to begin with, I doubt they'll even be... open minded enough to try. I fear that it might be too late for me. I fear that because I didn't study Music GCSE at school I wasn't able to build those social connections with the musical people at school.

None of my friends are musical. :(

Does this count as venting?

(I'm going to play Poet and The Pendulum by Nightwish to cheer myself up. Adrenalin ftw)

Merrymaker, this is probably not terribly helpful or relevant, but just as an interesting example of a violin player who has done something super different and interesting (and modern) with the instrument (creating his own one-man band, actually), are you familiar with Owen Pallet? He does very interesting music, which is most incredible if you watch video of him performing to help you realize just how much looping and such he's doing to make all those sounds at once, with just himself.

Anyway, just a semi-relevant tangental point of interest I thought I'd share.

Also, I totally get the sadness at wanting to make music and not having people around to do it with. I hope this changes for you.

There is a lot of demand for violinists in orchestras. You'll most likely never find a band, true, but get good at your instrument and you'll make more money easier and faster than any garage band. Garage band in the original sense before anyone leaps on that.

Damnit you plumber soundtech, the voice is supposed to be of equal or greater volume than the instruments. It's supposed to be understandable!

(This rant brought to you buy Dutch Guy, the "never actually a professional sound tech")

Other than that, that's actually pretty good!

I know, it's not a great video at all sound-wise. I mostly included that one because I think it's amazing to watch him insist on keeping on going through the ever-increasing storm!

If you are a musician on your own, get a microphone and start recording stuff. Or, make your own band.

These are advices that have worked for me and friends. And keep playing. If you keep playing, you will win eventually. I speak from experience.

I have no equipment. I don't have spare time to start something going. I would rather just turn up at a pre-existing thing and just play. Thanks for the advice, I will remember it when my schedule is less full and depressing.

I do keep playing, but I like playing with other people (hence why I play along to music rather than play solo) but I think I have a certain taste :P It's annoying that the one friend I do have who is a musician and would play with me, is Norwegian and lives in Norway so... North Sea>Me.

I want to see if the Electric Violin can do Metal. And oddly I have been trying to sing whilst play recently. You do get a weird effect with the acoustic violin of your voice being projected in the violin case.

When things get less depressingbusy for me and goodbusy I'll work on a project I've been inventing of doing a cover of a Nightwish songs.

Note: Not exactly a vent, more of a question pertaining to venting.

I've been reading the venting thread(s) for a bit now, but have always refrained from posting because my issues are non-existent/insignificant next to the other posts. Judging by the contents of various posts, I'm younger than most other people on the forum; as someone stepping in the independent stage of my life (university) I'm worried that this transition will lead to a lot more stress. Can anyone own their own experience to confirm or deny my theory?

University is fantastic, miles better than high school. Just remember to not be a dick and that you need to work hard and challenge yourself, both socially and academically.

I can tell you that if you feel sometimes you're unable to cope, you are not the first one. The University will have nice people who will be able to help you. Failing that don't be afraid to ask your parents.

Will you be living away from home?

I won't sugar-coat it and say it's a fantastic experience. It's an experience worth doing with highs and lows. You'll end up being more mature than when you went in. Be considerate. Don't be too angry at twats who are not considerate. Watch your money, but don't watch it too much and starve yourself. A first year of everything new and insufficient eating will make you very depressed.

I assume you're living away from home. It's very beneficial to geographically locate all places you can obtain food/groceries/materials for your course in the town, so you don't deprive yourself. I didn't specialise in Sculpture because I was intimidated with citing materials to work with.

Your stress level will almost certainly go up, but the increase in obligation-related stressors come with an associated increase in autonomy and freedom, which you can use to find better ways to assuage said stress.

I deny that adult life comes with any stress. It's a well oiled paradise.

University is stressful, yes. But it's also very rewarding. You're not just there to do a meaningless task and writing reports for the sake of making you work. You genuinely learn in the process! And it's a great experience.

In fact, I made life-long friends there and I know a lot about the music industry and how to run my own business now. I'm going to use that knowledge to start my own music school.

Growing up and stepping out into the world means more responsibility and stress, but it also means more freedom and room to grow and explore. Just like any stage of life, there are ups and downs, goods and bads, things you'll love and things you'll miss.

One of the most important pieces of "advice" (it was just a factual comment, really) I had in my first year away from home (living on another continent, nannying for 3 kids, dealing with homesickness and culture shock and taking-care-of-kids stress), was from my mom, who told me,

"Tally, the truth about being a grownup is that you don't feel grown up all the time, and you don't always know what you're doing."

Just don't expect to figure it all out at once. At some point, you'll probably mess up and have to look to friends and family to help you out of something, which we pretty much all do and learn from and move on, and then we're there to help someone else out the same way later. 'Tis life. Expect some of it to suck, and some of it to be absolutely wonderful.
