London Olympics Opening Ceremony

Postby Elomin Sha » 27 Jul 2012, 13:33

For those who saw the ceremony and get this. Does this mean the Queen is now a Bond Girl?

Forget that, Mr Bean playing Chariots of Fire!

Also fun fact: They sang the first and third verse of God Save The Queen. Out of six verses. For the curious here's the lyrics. Please pay special note to verse 6, especially if your name is Darkobra :D

I had no idea Britain had a national anthem in till tonight. I had always assumed it was the English's.
It was embarrassing to live next door to such a country.

Everything was great until the history of music. I'm still crossing my fingers that Doctor Who will be lighting the flame. I heard the Tardis during the history of music.

There was no Iron Maiden during that British music through time bit, considering some of the other songs that made that list, unless they themselves objected to being in it then Danny Boyle must have amnesia.

Remember guys, you have closing ceremonies yet to come. They can't play all the music in one show.

David Tennant BETTER light the flame as The Doctor. It will be the most epic day in continuity ever.

I wonder if they'll include any Welsh bands with the history of music to, you know, rub more salt in.

Well, that was a pretty cool fireworks co-ordinated with the band's first song.

I like "Come Together", but the UV-doves? Kinda more trippy than I'd expected...

Overall I enjoyed that. Some wonderful touches of humour that made the whole thing worthwhile. Deeply saddened by the lack of David Tennant lighting the torch, especially after they threw the TARDIS noise into the musical montage...

He should be thankful that we eventually took out this verse:

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade
May, by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush
And, like a torrent, rush
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King.

Can I just say, the whole bowl thing during the Parade of Nations confused me until we saw where they put them? I hope there is a higher torch that they will light outside the stadium, but still, that was really a nice sentimental touch.

Darkobra, I believe it.

Up until this point, I have been very cynical about the Olympics, I wasn't planning to watch it. But at a friends barbeque we set up a TV on the lawn and watched it.

It was rather good. Not a fan of the Arctic Monkeys, would much rather have had Brian May. Where was David Tennant? Bits of it were a bit long. But, yeah, I liked it. It wasn't cringeworthy and it was genuinely funny and well staged.

Not exactly a 'Proud to be British' moment, but it was... yeah, we're not shit. Not by a long way.

I don't understand this love-in for Tennant... He was probably off doing another Virgin TV advert.

Yeah, I get it, we all love Doctor Who, and he's a also a very good actor, but it's a sporting event. I can't honestly believe people believe he deserved to light the flame more than someone like Steve Redgrave.

And if we're gonna have Tennant, then where to do we draw the line? Should Hugh Laurie get a place? Patrick Stewart? Stephen Fry?

I thought the ceremony was very good, there were some really nice touches. Didn't think McCartney needed to play, really. Loved the lighting of the torch. A really great and inventive way of doing it.

Just watched it today (so I could skip all the flags) I thought it was really good, very impressive. The industrial revolution bit was amazing. As was giant Voldemort.

If you don't know.
There was an episode where Tennant's Doctor arrives in 2012 just before the Olympics to save an alien creature. After a torch bearer is injured by a bolt of lightning Tennant picks up the torch and lights it.

After hearing what I thought was the Tardis sound during the music montage I fully expected the Doctor to make an appearance. I was sadly dissapoint.
