It's Super Saturday apparently. 25 medals up for contention so we could see some wider gaps in the rankings after this.

-edit-

Back to 3rd again for now...

I have been watching 9 coverage here in Australia which seems to have a very sort attention span. They can not seem stick with any one event for any length of time. I know they are try to highlight Australians but they keep showing short segments of different sports.

I've recently been informed that there are some olympics going on, apparently. I trust I needn't hear more about such events.

I know it's epic and all, but for all they years they've been using it, they interstitial music NBC uses between events will never be anything else to me but the theme to The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

This is far and away the best game of soccer I've ever seen.

questions re the Olympic medals.

1 - shouldn't the table be done according to total medals, with gold weighted higher than silver and silver higher the bronze? So 3 point for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze. That would seem to make a lot more sense than just putting number of golds on top.

2 - Why are there so many bloody medals in the pool? 34 golds in just the pool. It just means that you only need a couple of really good swimmers who can win medals in multiple events to push you waaaaay up the medal table. almost half of america's medals have come from the pool, which is surely too high a proportion for one single sport?

other than that, I'm really enjoying the Olympics, and not just because Britain are doing so well :)

1. That bugs me, countries like Australia with a good haul of Silver and Bronze are ranked really low because they only have 1 gold. I suppose it is to impress upon those individuals that were Silver and Bronze that their efforts don't really matter in the end. I don't see Royal Mail release stamps for them or painting their post boxes in silver or bronze.

2. This one also bugs me, Cycling events have been cut down since Beijing IIRC, but there are still loads of swimming events.

2 - Note that unlike running, there's like 5-6 ways to swim (freestyle/crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, back crawl). Most times athletes specialize in one of these. Even Michael Phelps is known as especially strong in the butterfly.

yeah, but do you need to have 10 events in freestyle? as well as 4 for each of the other three strokes, then 4 different medleys and 6 relays? that seems a little excessive. I get that the different strokes are different, but they're not different enough to mean that they deserve quite so many different races. The fact that swimmers race in multiple different strokes shows that they're not different enough to legitimise that much variety.

I think the fact that Phelps, Franklin and co can win so many medals in one games is both unfair and serves to diminish the value of other golds in other events. Even a sprinter can only win in the 100, 200 and relay, whereas Phelps raced in 7 different events in these games alone. How can you compare that with events like heptathlon, where athletes compete in the same number of events for just 1 medal? or something like rowing, where there are only 6 races that an individual rower can physically enter?

Phelps is an incredible athlete, no doubt about that, but I think if someone can win 22 medals in one life time then there's something wrong with the system.

I hate the jumping from sport to sport on 9 as well. I'd much rather watch a whole event than bits and pieces of several different ones. But then, if they didn't, a lot of sports would wind up getting shafted. So... I don't know. Can't wait for tonight, though - there's a couple of local boys who are pegged for the gold.
