にほんご トピック
にほんご トピック
わたし わ まなぶ の にほんご。わたし わ にほんご だめ です。 しょぐない。
(Watashi wa manabu no Nihongo. Watashi wa Nihongo dame desu. Shogunai.)
So, I'm learning Japanese, and I know that a few people on the forums know some, or are learning(?). So I thought why not make a thread for the LRR forumites to talk (about) Japanese, no matter how much they know.
I've been learning, on and off, for the last year or so through the internet, textbooks, and various pen pals. One of the most difficult things that I find is sentence structure. As you can most likely see by the Hiragana, I have a long way to go before I'm ready to fluently use Japanese.
Oh, as a side note. I found this channel on youtube that's really interesting for Japanese culture advice. and there's also these if you don't know them already.

Re: にほんご トピック
I'm learning it as my second language in highschool but I really suck at it. I kniw how to read hiragana and katagana but that's all I know.

Re: にほんご トピック
I've been meaning to learn Japanese for a while. I picked up a book a few weeks ago to help, and I've looked at it periodically. Thanks to the tables in the back, I can now recognise quite a few Hiragana and Katakana characters, and can generally tell the difference between the two scripts. Kanji, on the other hand...I know maybe half a dozen or so.

Re: にほんご トピック
See, because of my sight, I'm looking more at phonetics rather than the written languages. I'm studying Hiragana for the now, and will move on to Katakana when i'm confident with it all.
Re: にほんご トピック
If it is not too much would you mind telling me what kind of sight problem you have? Also I think it is better for me to say I knew Katagana since it has been forever since I studied. I need to keep working on it but procrastination gets the better of me.

Type two occulocutanious albinism with astigmatism, nystagmus, and advanced lack of depth perception. Simply put, my sight is roughly about twenty times worse than a fully sighted person.
Anyhow: Japanese!

Re: にほんご トピック
I speak it... decently enough (I took five yers of it in school) and I know there's one other person on the forums who I think might be semi-fluent, but I can't remember who it is. Regardless, I'm here if you have questions or anything, though I definitely can't promise I'll know the answer.
Also, Dan, kanji's gonna be a bitch for you. My vision is fine (enough) for most things, but I need reading glasses to distinguish all but the most basic kanji.

Meh, life's a bitch, it's just how you cope with it.
Anyhow, where did you begin with your Japanese?
Edit: I think it might be GCNinja who speaks it as well. I'm sure I remember seeing that Kathleen knows some as well.

Re: にほんご トピック
It was offered as a language option at my middle school since there's a lot of Japanese immigrants in Seattle. My sister went to a Japanese immersion elementary school and I was so jealous of her speaking another language that I decided to learn it so I could be better than her. I just sort of kept taking it, and I took the AP test in may. Don't really know where I'll go from here.

Well, what I've done is find a Japanese person who's learning English and send email. I do it as a learning aid, but it might keep your skills sharp.

I think GaProgMan speaks it fluently as well.

That's who it was! I knew there was a 'g' somewhere in his name.
And I think I might do that, Dan. I have some ex-exchange students I could hit up.

Re: にほんご トピック
I'm currently trying to learn Japanese, firstly by learning the hiragana and katakana using a workbook and then going to move onto learning words etc. That said I've accumulated some vocabulary from the book (not alot).
I've found mahou's dictionary to be kind of useful as well. It's temperamental at times, but I've found it works.

Re: にほんご トピック
I made a bash at trying to pick up some Japanese but it was a few years ago and didn't really get anywhere. It's something I'd really like to learn though. Can anyone recommend any good tools?
Re: にほんご トピック
Ohhhhh and Japanese letters kinda look like squiggly drawings already. Also Geoff, our teacher used flash cards while teaching Hiragana letters and I think they work pretty well.

Re: にほんご トピック
I ended up learning Japanese in high school and visited Japan for a couple weeks. Being immersed in the language definitely helped me to pick it up. Since then, of course I've not practiced at all and forgotten most of what I learned. Recently, I've started listening to lessons to pick it up again. I actually listen to a podcast on iTunes called JapanesePod101. I find it's pretty good and has different lessons for different experience levels. They also have a website: http://www.japanesepod101.com/

Re: にほんご トピック
I used to study it and even got a degree in it, but it's been years and now I'm lucky if I can read the kana. I used to know a few hundred kanji, I definitely enjoyed kanji the most.
I'll get back into it at some point, but I want to re-learn Spanish first. One language at a time.

Re: にほんご トピック
Since I grew up in Taiwan, I learned how to read Chinese characters. Therefore I can read some kanji.
Totally accurate, except for all the times I'm not.

Re: にほんご トピック
I've downloaded this about three times in the past five years, every time meaning to get into it and actually learn something.
Dunno if it's actually of any use, because every time I try, something comes along (wife getting immigration papers, parent has to go in for surgery, ****ing Steam Sales) to completely distract me from it...

Re: にほんご トピック
I've just started my second year of 日本語 at school here, so I can do a fair amount but excuse any unconfidence I may have. I find it quite interesting, though. I like how, unlike English, it actually mostly follows the rules (when there are rules, anyway).

This reminds me that I have been meaning to learn C for last few years.

I had a go at this. I've learnt 4 katakana characters at least
Re: にほんご トピック
I just got home from my college Japanese class. I learned the kana in HS but stopped pretty much there. Recently been learning Korean as well (which has the best alphabet) but hoping having formal training in Japanese will help me better self teach korean, because god languages are complicated.

I really want to learn Japanese, but I'm not sure where to start.
