Red Dwarf X
Red Dwarf X
Red Dwarf started back up on October 4th. Series 10! Not watched it yet but as an avid fan of 1-9, I'm very worried about 10 not hitting the mark.
Going to watch it now anyway. But just wanted to let the smegheads know! It's back!

Re: Red Dwarf X
There's a bigger budget and the cast has aged, but honestly looking back through my DVDs of the old favourite hardly a thing has changed in the characters, the environments, and the comedy.
It is very much still Red Dwarf, and I am loving it to bits.

Re: Red Dwarf X
I haven't watched it yet due to worry. IX was decent. Started and ended well, but the middle was painful. Can you watch it again on a legitamate catch-up service or will I have to locate it in the backalleys of the internet?

Re: Red Dwarf X
15 minutes in and it helps to know the previous series ONLY for the sake of knowing the characters but there's nothing that requires you to go get 9 right now and catch up.

Re: Red Dwarf X
There's a clip floating around of an alternative ending to series 8 which explains and sets up 9 and 10 a bit better (barring any further information given in 10!)
Also best bit of the episode? "It's a moose!"

Re: Red Dwarf X
Gf made me watch it, I've only seen a couple of episodes of the very first season (again at her insistance). Thought it was pretty funny. Certainly didn't need to know the characters (although I kind of did, DAMN YOU POP CULTURE!).

Ah! I knew I had something to watch. Really excited about this, I seem to be the only person who really enjoyed Back To Earth.

Re: Red Dwarf X
Bah, I haven't seen anything of X yet.
9 was ok. To me 9 was more like a pilot for more series basically saying "Yes, we can still make Red Dwarf even with an aged cast".
I have to agree with Merrymaker_Mortalis that 9 started and ended well. The middle was not something to write home about (although I found it funny that they actually decided to explain why they were using VHS tapes in the far off future).
I haven't heard about that. I kind of assumed that all the events explaining what made 8 turn into 9 was suppose to happen offscreen for the sake of the jokes in 9 about how "Series 9 was the best one ever".

I enjoyed it as a whole.
I didn't enjoy it episodically.
The really good story didn't suite the episode format well at all because if you were watching it as it was aired, you'd rate each episode individually. I might be just from a culture of self-contained episodes and I judge episodes like that (hence why I think V is one of the best American series I've watched because each episode can stand-alone and the series doesn't go on for too long)

Re: Red Dwarf X
That's a point, actually. I did watch them all at once.
Re: Red Dwarf X
My family and I did not enjoy IX very much at all. It was so un-Red Dwarf as well as lacking a certain... atmosphere. This first episode of Red Dwarf X surprised us immensely, in two ways. The first is that it regained the atmosphere of Doug Naylor era Red Dwarf. The second was that it was not just funny again, but quotable!
Re: Red Dwarf X
So after watching it, I hated the first 5 minutes. It just felt like they were trying to force it. After that, THE LADS ARE BACK! I loved the moose scene! And the end scene with the phone.
2 days until the next episode!

Re: Red Dwarf X
Yeah, the first 5 minutes are a little dodgy, but the rest of the episode is just top form all the way.

Re: Red Dwarf X
Watching the episode now. First 5 minutes were bad, mainly because of the laugh track.
I wasn't expecting to cry at: "We hosed him down and gave him a hat."

Here's the video in question. Not the most spectacular acting or effects - it was unfinished - but it does wrap things up a lot better.

"Watch Red Dwarf - Series X and all will be revealed in episode 6."
Ooo.

Watched it, really enjoyed it. "We just hosed him down and gave him a hat." was a line of beauty.
Re: Red Dwarf X
And his reaction made that line gold for me.

Quite good.
It felt like Red Dwarf and I was laughing out load. I liked how Kryten had lines under his eyes.

Re: Red Dwarf X
I soon forgot that I was watching the 2012 series of Red Dwarf and it moulded itself into Red Dwarf.
It's succesful thus far.
I did giggle at the start in the first 5mins, but there were some lame jokes that could burn.

Agreed, the entire exchange throughout the episode was superbly well done.
