Welp, the time is fast approaching, and while I got the idea a little late to gather sponsors for charity fundraising, I WILL be growing out an epic 'stache for Movember.

Got up this morning and popped a fresh blade in the razor:



Damn, I look stern when I'm trying to take a pic of myself in the mirror (protip kids; angle the camera so you don't get it in the shot and look like a facile twit ).



But there you go; I'll trim it up tomorrow, and then start growing it!

(BTW, that last pic also shows why I don't shave my upper lip if I can avoid it - so darn sensitive :^( )

On another note, glad to know I'm not the only one who gets annoyed by shots where the camera's in the mirror.

No, it's pretty much always been my life.

I think I need to fund a workplace where people are a bit more gung-ho so I could actually raise some money to shave off the beard.

Plus, I'd need spousal permission.

I contemplated it as I've been largely clean shaven this year, but I'm still not in the habit of shaving regularly enough for it to count. Maybe next year, it's a worthy cause and a relatively simple thing to do to raise teh monies.

I'm participating too. I went from handlebar and full beard to clean shaven. I'll edit this post later when I get access to some pics.

@empath What's your shaving routine? I have sensitive skin as well, but I don't have anything like that. I use a genuine badger hair brush, Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream and a sharp Gillette Fusion Pro Glide razor. Only shave with the grain, never against the grain particularly with sensitive skin. I shave almost immediately after I shower because that's when the hair is softest. The other tip is to use a sharp razor. Guys that used to have more facial hair tend to get a little lax on making sure they use a sharp razor because the neck tends to have hardier skin and can handle a little pulling from a dull razor which your upper lip could never handle.

That's why I use a double-edged razor, the blades are like 10 cents each so there's no excuse to use a dull one.

Also, you can go against the grain, just go with the grain on the first pass - and possibly do an additional across-the-grain pass as well. Use hot water to shave and cold to rinse.

The double-edged razors no longer have an advantage on shaving close to the disposables and the disposables are just easier to handle and use.

Shaving against the grain is still only good for some faces. Men with sensitive skin can't regularly shave against the grain regardless of whether they've made a first pass with the grain. It just results in irritation and ingrown hairs.

Okay, I guess I'm standing in the middle of this discussion (especially since I sparked it off ).

I do use a cartridge razor - an 'old' Gillette Sensor Excel. And since I typically only shave every other day, I'll change cartridges about every two weeks.

On the other hand, as for shaving style, I follow met's suggested routine: first with the grain, then across, and then (if needed) finally against the grain. I'll often finish up checking by touch for stubbly areas and then draw against the direction I felt the leftovers.

It's a given that I do this AFTER my shower (technically at the end of my shower after completing the rest of my ablutions ).

The interesting thing is, I got that one cut on the left side of my upper lip during the WITH the grain run, and the other runs may well have complicated it. And that shave with a brand spanking new set of blades (I'm crazy, not stupid ).

But I've always had a more sensitive upper lip - more likely to get nicks and cuts up there than any other part of my face, even when I'd been uniformly clean-shaven for months. *shrug* Maybe I just suck at shaving that part of my face - the presence of the nose throws me off, or drawing towards the lip? Whatever.

Mind you, it's mostly moot for the next month, anyways.

I gave up on shaving with bladed razors, I used to cut myself too frequently. I use an electric shaver these days, although I need to try to find a replacement set of blades for this one, it's getting blunt.

I use a double-edged razor, like met, mostly because you can't beat 10 cents a blade for price (and I'm a poor uni student).

I find electric razors do more damage to my skin.

I do have a cheap 'philishave' that I use for short-notice touch-ups (friends call to go out, etc.) but for me a blade's preferred.

As a 24/7 bearded dude (avatar pic is over 2 years old), I find Movember odd. Well intentioned, but actually very lazy. All the same I hope you and others raise lots of money, but still.

I love how the hair went too...

I'm too bad at growing facial hair to bother with movember. I also shave with an electric razor for much the same reason. I'm trying to get into the habit of shaving more often, but I don't have to do it everyday. My hair is also not very dark, so you don't really see the stubble.

I've taken a starting picture for school, but I have too many things going on this month that may force me to shave.

I use a Gillette Mach Fusion and it's a lot nicer to use than any disposable blade or single/double bladed razor. I almost never cut myself or cause irritation. Granted, it's a more expensive option than cheap razors.
