Eh, whatever... Go watch it... Maybe I'm just not as into racist movies as other people.

He's said repeatedly he wants to be able to focus on more creative, indie type films. He has all the money in the world to do whatever he pleases and it sounds like that's what he's going to do.

As an example, he did "Red Tails" the nearly-universally panned movie about the Tuskegee Airmen. A project no one would front so he just did it himself, because he felt it was a story worth telling.

That is exactly what I meant, I knew it didn't sound right when I was typing it, but I was on a crappy computer so opening a new tab to check was out of the question. Should have just gone with Vader's Fist.

I stand corrected, however the rest of what I said holds water (I hope)

You're right, that was mean of me. I shouldn't have called you dumb. You're not dumb!

You're just wrong, as your signature already conveniently points out!

This is totally off-topic (sorry), but: I wouldn't call the movie racist so much as somewhat problematic. It's got some good things (main character is African American, falls in love with a prince who is probably from the Maldives, main character is proactive in achieving her goals instead of being scooped up by a prince, has a good relationship with her mother who is not dead) and some bad things (she spends most of the film as a frog, the main villains is a "voodoo witch doctor" which plays to the western stereotypes of African voodoo, her main "friend" is a white girl she essentially works for, her big dream is to... own a restaurant? which I guess is better than dreaming about being a princess... IDK)

It's complicated. I think saying the film is racist, as AdmiralMemo did, is oversimplifying.

I think there is probably much truth in this. It's funny: my knee-jerk reaction was to go oh gosh what a horror, Disney has gotten its claws into one more thing, and recall the travesty that was their Hunchback of Notre Dame film, all the awful storytelling points of The Little Mermaid, how bad their telling of the story of Pocohontas was, etc.

But at the same time, that doesn't account for the fact that Disney's Beauty & the Beast is one of my favourite movies, and there are many other films of theirs that I love. As with any huge company that outputs so much material, some of it is good, some of it is bad, some of it is absolutely excellent and some of it is utter crap.

Ultimately, I feel that George Lucas has already thoroughly diverted Star Wars from the things that I like about it. Disney taking it over could be good and could be bad. We'll just have to wait and see, and no doubt everyone will have varying opinions about the results. I figure worst case scenario, I hate it and ignore the new Star Wars stuff as I have been for years anyway, so no change there. On the other hand, it's very possible that there will be new Star Wars material I can actually enjoy.

Got it in one. Maybe I was oversimplifying, but the movie just came off as wrong to me. Maybe that was because I had such high hopes for it, being the first black Disney princess.
