It's terrifying how many official and loved Star Wars novels there are that take place after VI.

Slack Mesa wrote:With the new movies set centuries after the original trilogy, the inevitable character who looks just like Boba Fett will be explained away as a descendant of the clones. And there will be some expository dialogue that explains how the Ewoks told Chewbacca the secret to eternal life out of gratitude for his help in saving Endor.
Chewie is dead, crushed by a moon saving Anakin Solo.
By the time the original trilogy starts only Vaders 401st is made up of clones, the Empire had destroyed the cloning facilities to prevent anyone else using them and recruited not clones to be storm trooper. What's left of the 401st during RotJ were either on the Executor (Vader's flag ship) which was destroyed in the battle against the second Death Star, or on the forest moon of Endor and were all killed by the Rebels.

Do you mean the 501st? (aka Vader's Fist)

Totally accurate, except for all the times I'm not.

Not all cloning facilities were destroyed - The Last Command and Dark Empire spring to mind.
Re: Well this is... a thing. (Disney buys Lucasfilm)
I'm pretty excited about this due to the aforementioned Marvel universe. Sure, there will probably be clunkers on their way to maximize their investment ($4 billion is a huge investment, even for Disney), but the overall impact has to be a positive.
I would love to see something set hundreds of years in the future. It wouldn't be difficult to relate things back to the original trilogies if in no other way than the concept of bringing balance to The Force. It won't be difficult to believably get a modern day Mark Hamill into the movie as a holo explaining some key plot point.
I think it would survive with a complete recasting without much trouble because of the positive response to the new Star Trek movie (King Kool notwithstanding). Shatner and Nimoy are at least as iconic as Hamill and Ford.
I adore the Thrawn trilogy as some of my favorite books, period, but I don't think they would play particularly well onscreen. The most interesting parts of that book had nothing to do with the action. Heck, Thrawn is a military genius, essentially, so all of his big scenes would be constrained to a bridge or his quarters. That's not exactly gripping cinema. We know all too well how painful political conflict plays out on screen in the Star Wars universe.

Eh, I think they are still the best novels in terms of capturing the tone of the original trilogy. Hell, the second novel opens with pretty much an exact retread of the Battle of Hoth (except without a battle).
Anybody else wondering what Lucas is going to do with his time/money now? Slightly frightened?

I'm going to be sad for the SWTOR MMO. Had promise and probably will end up being the most-short lived MMO in history.
A year or so of existing in retail?
I hope this doesn't put off other developers being bold and experimenting with AAA Mutiplayer experiences.

Re: Well this is... a thing. (Disney buys Lucasfilm)
Isn't Empire usually considered the gem in the SW crown? The entry not written or directed by Lucas?
All I'm seeing is SW geeks going, "Waaah! They've changed it now it sucks!" Disney owns more than people realise and they know how to handle big franchises. Michael Eisner almost ran Disney into the ground until 2005 and now John "Pixar" Lasseter runs the show and he knows what he's doing (see Tangled and The Princess and the Frog).
Also, Kathleen Kennedy is now LucasFilm President. Know what she did before? She was vice-president of LucasFilm and also worked heavily with Disney as producer of the US dubs of Ponyo and Arriety.
Disney know what they're doing. I believe they will not ruin LucasFilm or Star Wars. Disney is a company that believes in its product to an absurd degree, to the point of "trading" Al Michaels to Universal for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

I think he's referring to Attack of the Clones.
Which actually wasn't that bad considering what came before and what came after. It certainly did the job of being entertaining at the cinema.

Sorry, mine wasn't a direct reply. I'm saying that people complaining that Lucas isn't involved in a SW film are ignoring the fact the film usually considered the best in the series was the one he had least to do with.

I think a lot of people my age grew up in the years of Eisner, and still have this residual mindset that Disney is a company that destroys its properties. Bob Iger (current chair and CEO) seems much better and much smarter about things.

That's actually what I was just about to post. Does the purchase include Lucasarts? I'm guessing yes, but if so it does lead to interesting possibilities. One of the problems that Tim Schafer mentioned if I recall correctly in getting things like Grim Fandago ported to Steam (or maybe it was have a sequel made) was that Lucasfilms made it nearly impossible to get anything done due to changing heads and various other problems. This switch leads to interesting possibilities. Disney is in the games business already, and they may find there is demand for these games to at least get fresh rereleases.

Yep, it includes all the sub-companies like LucasArts, as well as ILM.

I figured as much. It'd be weird if it didn't include all of them too.
