What I did instead of watching Desert Bus (mostly)

Postby AlexanderDitto » 24 Nov 2012, 17:51

Unfortunately I was kind of preoccupied this year during Desert Bus. Besides banning probably about 100 spammers, while the crew was bussing, I was working on this:

http://cis.upenn.edu/~roederer/LRR/main.pdf

It's the paper for my second Written Preliminary Exam. Basically the last thing I have to do before I can start working on my thesis.

It's due tomorrow. Basically done. I'm just working on polishing it up. Enjoy.

And if you find any errors, let me know.

...there was math. And a colorful thing with letters on it a one point. Pretty much everything else went over my head.

Also Ditto, are you like a for realz mod now, or were you just handling the spam during Desert Bus?

Pretty sure Alex and I will be stripped of our powers pretty soon; the crew's probably just taking a break for the moment. And we haven't instituted our own theocracy yet, so we're probably fine for the moment.

Neat stuff! Read the abstract so far, might have a look through a little later.

It is pretty likely that you will be reverted to user status again soon, but we need to implement some sort of spam management system first, and Paul simply hasn't had time to look at it yet.

Nice work and interesting skim, as I myself am a math PhD, though optimization/machine learning is not my area. But I actually did some work for a big data analytics company this past summer, so most of it resonates.

YES FIGURE 6 IS MY FAVORITE FIGURE. It took me 8 hours of work to make that figure.

SECOND FAVORITE FIGURE: Figure 4, which is a series of five pictures of various crotches. Yesssssssssssssss~

Also: just spam during Desert Bus:

I'm happy to help stop-gap until Paul figures out what do. But yeah, eventually I will be hanging up my cape and magic trousers. Or more accurately having them forcibly removed OK THIS GOT WEIRD FAST

:D THANK YOU! <3 If nothing else the Introduction and Conclusion should be understandable to most people. And failing that, the abstract. And failing THAT, may I recommend Figure 6?

Yes, I understood the introduction and conclusion. The rest... sure was some math.

I just skimmed it and have to say that "Noisy Oracles" would make a pretty bitching band name.

Oh and you can just call me Dave.
No need for the whole screen name.

So..... you're teaching computers to analyse medical data to aid diagnosis?

Also: Is Figure 4 from the 'I accidentally sat on it' file? Awesome.

Also, not that I'm really qualified to say, but it looks extremely professional, good job.

Those were most certainly words. One small formatting thing: isn't the abstract supposed to be on it's own page? I could be mistaken, but I thought it was supposed to be.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That abstract makes it much clearer. I probably should have read that rather than skimming the whole thing. Silly me.

I also missed most of Desert Bus because I had to work on stuff for my thesis.
Wish I had this much to show for it though...

Congratulations AlexanderDitto!

Mara

PS. You misspelled your name on the title page though, but I get it. Roederer and Ditto is pretty much the same keys.

I am hoping that my committee has this exact response.

Basically, yes!

Also, yeah I have no idea what's going on in that middle picture in Figure 4. O_o

Also, thank you! :D <3

This particular template didn't put it on a separate page. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I'm pushing 45 pages, though, so it's probably best that it isn't. XD

Aw shucks thanks! <3 Haha yes that is a slight misspelling, but I doubt they'll mind. ;D

I officially turned it in yesterday! Now I get to work on the slides for my presentation. @_@

How can you start with "one word: power" then post thousands of words of spam in the deputies thread?

I saw this on Twitter and it made me think of this thread. It's a good read for anyone not in graduate school for math.
