Music Suggestions and Finds

Postby nicholasmc1 » 13 Dec 2012, 07:48

So I'm a straight up dirty music hipster, that being said I always need more music and wish to expand my horizons. So please people send in your funky finds and share the love(That is a prerequisite).

While I'm at it,these guys from Queensland are some wicked Funk-Metal...but mostly funk.
http://osakapunch.bandcamp.com/album/voodoo-love-machine Best song on the album being Muted Woot

Another fantastic Australian artist who I bought the album of by accident, Lehman B Smith is seriously amazing on a hot 35 degree night http://lehmannbsmith.bandcamp.com/

She is really good, reminds me of Laura Marling but with a less painfully piercing voice. Do you know how a link to a torrent or legal purchase of an album?

I'm going to defiantly look at you for having free higher education, and the fact that if the government breaks your kneecaps, you get them repaired for free.

Cuong Vu - Vina's Lullaby (currently one of my favorite ballads)
Recently, I've also been listening to: Chris Cheek, Lettuce - Lettsanity, and also some Jojo Mayer & Nerve

Probably most people in these parts are like "i don't like that stuff. sounds too esoteric and jazz sucks." But I don't give a *&^%.

I've always liked the soundtrack to "Catherine" as it mixes classic music with rock music.

[Rendition of Bizet L'Arlésienne Second Suite Farandole]

Also the Uncharted Waters II Special Edition Soundtrack is really relaxing to listen to.
[Land of Luxury]

Not sure if you'll like these, but whatever, I think they're good and I want them to be heard.

I was recently introduced to The Danger Bees whom I am particularly fond of.

Been picking up random indie CDs from the local thrift shop so if I find anything else decent I'll post here.

I recently found a band called skyforger. They make "folk metal", which is not really my thing. But they have also made a load of pretty much traditional latvian songs. Which are somehow awesome. To give 2 examples:

Migla Migla Rasa Rasa
Gatavs Bijou Karavirs
THE DUTCH!! THE DUTCH AGAIN!!!!!

@Mark VI, this stuff is really cool, but now I need a coffee and a smoke...I don't even smoke

@Dutch Guy, are they russian? Its mad but I can't pick the language.

@auberginequeen, tbh Kinds meh, but maybe that's because I listen to so much stuff the alternative indipendant scene is very samey and gets on my nerves.

Well, Vanguard got me hooked on Nico Vega (specifically one of their 'set closers', Beast)...dunno how I missed that Bioshock Infinite trailer...

And a FoaF pointed me in the direction of my new gaming anthem: "Dungeon Hustle" by the Mississippi Bones.

I listen to a lot of alternative indie too so I know it's fairly homogeneous, but I've found it really hard to find anyone who does it well. So many are held back by god-awful singers or their instruments are too loud or there's no real substance. And some of their other songs (which aren't on youtube) are pretty amusing imo. Lyrics include

What do we want, guys?
A pet sand cat!
But you can't own those...
We know, and that's a drag
Why can't you settle on an ordinary cat?

or

Camille says, "Dave don't you know
Nobody wants to hear a song about your bed"
Shut up, Camille, nobody likes you

As for your link, I feel like it didn't really have anything to it. It was quite... like dumping lukewarm oatmeal over your head. I guess we just differ too much in our tastes.

I'm a big fan of Hallelujah the Hills. They're wonderful and I do not understand how they're not wildly famous yet... oh yeah, its because the vast majority of people don't know good music and the music industry likes it that way.

You can listen to/download(Save link as on the speaker) a good deal of their music on their site and their singles and a few of their albums are pay what you want.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Miracle of Sound yet. Gavin Dunn is a very good musician and a very good guy. Some of my favorites of his are Rise, Calamity, and Life in Bullet Time.

I recommend these 3 bands: King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, and Coheed and Cambria.

Nothing too awfully indie, but they're prog bands, and it's a genre that typically gets no exposure.
