The Hobbit

Just got back from an early showing of The Hobbit (2D version). GO SEE IT. SEE IT NOW.

I'm going to go see the 3D version next week.
Lots of laughs, the actor sung songs are great, Gollum is great. There was lots of clapping through out the film for certain scenes. Damn I want to see it again, right now.

I wish Riddles in the Dark had been done creepier as opposed to comically. I've always said that would be the scene I'd judge any Hobbit adaptation on, and I wasn't keen on the direction they took it.

Also, not a fan of Mr One-Arm.

However, it's a really good, fun film. I'm just nitpicky because it's my favourite book.

Only managed to see it in 2D because the IMAX hadn't transferred in time for the staff show, but going to see it in IMAX at some point soon.

The first film gets all the way up to Riddles? That's got to be at least half way through, not sure how they'll stretch the rest to 2 books.

From what I've gathered, the first one goes all the way to the barrels. I'm guessing the second one (do I really need spoiler tags?) will be Bree and dealing with Smaug, while the third will be the aftermath of Smaug's death, the Battle of Five Armies, and then wrapping everything up.

I'm really not sold on three movies, but I'm still looking forward to it. I'll probably go see it this Sunday.

The big question for me is, is it book accurate? How much is from the original book, how much was made up & how much was drug in from other sources?

I'm not happy to hear Riddles in the Dark was done comically. That scene was always my favourite in the book & also frightened me in the 1977 Rankin/Bass production. (The soundtrack for which I have just recently recorded to digital from my LPs!)

Still, I can't wait to see it.

Really really good. Sooooo in. Riddles veered between funny and fuckin' creepy as only Gollum can. Best part of the film. Freeman was excellent, dwarves were entertaining, Necromancer looks promising. Aaaaaaaall the thumbs up. All of them.

It is as book accurate as the lord of the rings however it is not "the hobbit" book accurate, it is based on "the hobbit" and "Unfinished Tales" with bits of history drawn from "The Silmarillion"

Peter Jackson has said that he kept the film lighthearted and fun like the book but took the action sequences which were rather short and expanded them to "what would have happened" Its a kids book turned into a adult movie, so we can film what was left to the imagination.

I'll spoiler tag some of my post just in case, even though I'm not going to say anything really specific. I'm learning that people's opinions on what constitutes spoilers for this movie vary widely.

I'm considering writing a blog post about my thoughts on this. I was, overall, not impressed with what they did with the story. The costumes & makeup, scenery & set dressing, cinematography, music, all that was very impressive and wonderful. But the actual way they told the story as a whole and the way they kept dragging in other things? Not a fan. Nevermind that it's one of my favourite stories and I don't like seeing it messed with (that happens with movie adaptations, have to get past it), I thought it felt excessively over the top and very choppy - a messy patchwork instead of an interesting linear tale informed by lots of carefully thought-out historical background & detail.

On the other hand, Martin Freeman was, in my opinion, pretty much the most perfectly hobbity actor ever and was excellent in the role. Loved him as Bilbo, which was a relief because I never really warmed to Elijah Wood as Frodo.

And one-arm made me want to scream. I am super pissed off about that whole thing.

But I think it's worth going to see, both for the good stuff it contains & for the ability to be part of the huge social discussion of it. And to make up your own mind about it, of course.

I enjoyed the movie, but more importantly, here is what I thought of the Trailers:

Warm Bodies: Looks really good. I heard someone call it Twilight with zombies which is INCREDIBLY unfair.

Man of Steel: I'm betting he dies in the third one.

Star Trek: Where is Sylar, and why isn't he cutting people's heads open.

Oblivion: I preferred Wall-E when he was taller and less robotic. This movie looks unnecessary.

After Earth: Will Smith, why must you be such a phenomenal actor? I want to see this simply because of you

Pacific Rim: GLaDOS? Is that. . .Is that GlaDOS? WUT?!?!?!?!

Epic: Pretty, and Aziz Ansari kind of makes me want to see it, but I'll pass.
