Re: Gif or Jif?
Well, I've always said Gif.. But to be fair to Jif.. Giraffe is a J sound. George is a J sound.. So it's not like it's completely set. I will not blend the two, in some unholy fusion. ...Jigif. Jigglypuff. It will not forever be known as a Jigglypuff.

In other news, my name will now be pronounced 'jrej.' Which sounds suspiciously like Dredge. Which reminds me of magic. I'm going to go play magic.

I'm going to pronounce it as Zamboni, just so I can say that more often during the summer.

We don't. In Australia, it's "rubbish". Also, I like to put a little accent thing on the last G. Because unnecessary French, bitches!
ANYWAY, I'm standing by my original decision. Calling GIFs Jigglypuffs from now on. #DEALWITHIT.

It is more the verbage that English has stolen. English grammar is predominately Germanic.

Re: Gif or Jif?
I say Hard G because as far as I see, it would inherit it from the hard G in Graphical Interface Format. It's not a Giraffical Interchange Format after all.

Re: Gif or Jif?
The sound the letters made in the original words is irrelevant as far as acronyms go (Scuba is pronounced scooba after all, not scuhba). It's a "rule" that's made up solely for the .gif argument. Plenty of acronyms change the sounds of the letters, because acronyms are created by taking the initials and looking at what the new word should sound like.
So if gif looks like it should be pronounced with a hard G to you, then pronounce it that way. If a soft G seems better, then use it.

Re: Gif or Jif?
Clearly the solution is to alter English to add a diacritical mark to letters that can be hard or soft to indicate which it should be in that situation. Kinda like how the umlaut elongates vowel sounds.

Yeah I haven't bothered to read all the arguments but I would just like to point out that if one goes the dictionary.com to listen to the pronunciation that option isn't there lawl

From now on, I'm pronouncing it Giraffical, and all gifs shall be of giraffes.
