Arrested Development Season 4 - NOT A SPAMBOT

Postby Sieg Reyu » 27 May 2013, 20:52

This post is Spoiler free, but I expect the rest of the thread to not be. Be forewarned

It is now officially a thing. I watched it all over the last few days, and I enjoyed it. For those of you who haven't watched it yet, stick it through. I was very confused for the first half, but everything started falling into place after that. For those who have watched it, what are your thoughts?

Regardless of Arrested Development - which was always pretty funny - I like that we now have a precedent in recent TV history of a good show getting cancelled and then getting picked back up, no matter how long it's been (7 years!) and how many false starts it gets. Uplifting stuff.

Kristen Wiig as young Lucille is genius.

I agree. I was thrown of to see them actually use different people for younger versions, but she definitely fit the bill perfectly. They probably could have done better than Seth Rogen for George, but I like him so much that I don't care.

I should have counted the guest stars, because there were roughly a million billion of them. Seeing all of the Workaholics guy in one scene was funny.

...what does it say about this place when I saw the thread title and - before I saw the author's name - assumed it was a spambot-thread? :(

Putting 'NOT A SPAMBOT' makes it seem more like a spambot actually. :p

That's TOTALLY what a spambot would say! Get him!

Honestly I watched all of it and did not really enjoy it.
Too many call backs to old jokes, fan service, and the pacing was slow.

They'e not callbacks, they're running gags. Huge difference. The show would have felt empty without it. I think it helped it feel like it was part of the same show. I just watched the first three seasons a couple of weeks back in order to get ready, and I think it definitely feels connected.

And in some cases, I think they gave some of the gags the payoff they needed, like the Ann "Her?" gag.

Though I will agree, the pacing was weird at first, but I think it was necessary in order to tell the narrative the way they wanted.

I'll probably end up rewatching it next week to find a million jokes I missed that suddenly turns everything on it's head.

I just finished it and I thought it was pretty bad. I think I may have only laughed out loud once and while I found some of the character arcs interesting I didn't find any of it truly funny. It some cases I found them painfully depressing.

So... I've never seen any Arrested Development.

Should I fix that?

Characters often say dialogue that appears rather mundane, but after watching a later episode, you realize it was a joke about an event that hadn't happened yet. The Arrested Development wiki is primarily dedicated to uncovering these jokes.

At the beginning of season 2 Buster finds a hand shaped chair that resembles one he had as a child. He remarks "I never thought I could miss a hand this much." Later that season, he loses a hand to a seal with a taste for blood.

Judge whether or not you want to watch a show based off of that.

After the first three episodes it really picks up. I think it was hampered a lot by the fact they couldn't film the majority of the series with all the actors at the same time, took away from it a lot.

The Lindsay episodes and the Maeby episodes are my favourite so far. We've got the two George Michael and the Buster episode to go. I would have prefered it if Maeby got two episodes instead of Tobias.

While pleased to see more AD, I wish they could have confirmed a the movie or more seasons to tie up the storyline. Where they left AD in the original run was an obvious stopping point.

I had heard rumors, well before it had come out, that season four was going to be a bunch of episodes detailing what each character had been doing in the span of time between the end of the series and now, which would then tie into a movie. The rumors about the content for season 4 were correct, so I'm guessing the movie is true as well.

I think everyone should at least try Arrested Development. If it's for you, you'll know by the first couple episodes.

IMO, it's one of the best comedies in TV history.
