Names

Postby MinniChi » 28 May 2013, 19:29

I am pregnant with what appears to be a boy.
I am terrible at thinking up names.
Therefore, I was thinking the wonderful community we have here could throw out some ideas.
And my sister only offers me the names of dead conquerors and communists.
The only name I can guarantee we won't even consider is James. No offense to anyone with that name. But we know too many already, it's already confusing.

And in general, Have fun with it. The surname we're working with is Mahony.

I'll think on it, and maybe post later if I come up with some good ones. Hope these might help.

I was going to suggest Oswald, but I feel that would achieve the same effect.

I dunno, I've always wanted to name a kid Wolfgang, or Leopold, or Nikola or Linus or Howl or Milo or Antoine.

Leopold and Nikola have the misfortune of being shortenable to Leo and Nick, neither of which is any good. But I like the others.

Then again, this is probably why I should not be allowed to have children.

Joshua Mahoney
Nathan Mahoney

I throw my support for Alexander as well, it can also cover "Alex", "Xander", or even "Lex" to suit the lad as he develops; pretty flexible.

There's some decent 'M' names, but...there's the alliteration issue - it COULD work well for him, or it could be a problem.

When it comes right down to it EVERYONE gets teased, made fun of, or picked on eventually during 'growing up', for ANY reason. An odd name just makes it easier. :?

...just take it from "Mucus Membrane". :P

Dexter Dexter Dexter Dexter Dexter. [I'm naming my child this, but in like 10 years]

But seriously, name it something easy to spell [so he doesn't have to explain it to every teacher and secretary for the rest of his life, and a name normal enough to not get teased, but rare enough that he doesn't have to be Bob M. 4 in class.

And yes, everyone gets teased, but having your NAME be part of that is so awful, so helpless.

Also, it's been shown that bosses hire people who's names they can say easily more often than others, because they want to make the workplace easier on themselves.

Oh, and give him a name that has a lot of nicknames, for if he wants it to fit his personality later in life. I always regret that Kelsey can't be made into a nickname.

Don't name the kid Wolfgang, I used to torture this kid with that name by renaming him Amadeus.

That's true. And to add to that, be careful with middle names. I got taunted a bit for mine back when I was a kid. It wasn't even that weird of one. :/

The reason I like Alexander as a name is that it's common enough where people won't look at you like you're mad and ask 'Where did you get THAT name?', is uncommon in general (I don't know any Alexanders in my area), has a bunch of nicknames that can go with it, and still sounds fairly... regal, if that's the right word. Plus, you can say you named him after Ditto.

But seriously, Kapol Mahoney. Just sayin. :P

Also your kid should totally become a cop. Mahoney is such a cop drama name. I love it.

Um, "Kel", "Kelly/Keli/Kelli/Kely/etc"?

I know I'm a little late, but... :?

and heck, I had a peer in school "Bradford->Brad" that everyone called "Max" (and no, it was not a middle name, or even a brother/father/etc. Sometimes a nickname isn't derived from the names you are given. Image

I suggest you call him Funkasaurus, or you could call him Siegfried that's a name i've always really liked for some reason, but Funkasaurus is a much better name.
Trust me, I'm a scientist.

First one off the top of my head, Neil?

Others:
Elliot
Cameron
Dean
Brendan

Why not Liam eh? Sounds good doesn't it? (Liam is my name fyi)
Also, the wife usually generates the better name. It saved me from being called Morris.

I'm going to put another vote behind Alexander. I may be biased though, since it's a name that's been passed down through my family for at least five generations.

(Fun fact: my parents strongly considered giving me the middle name Alexander, but actually decided not to because it would make my initials JAM. Completely unrelated to my current internet name, but I've considered having it changed since it works on multiple levels, plus it's a lot more interesting than the incredibly generic middle name I have now.)

/me flips a table
why is there no Robert up here yo?
It's nice, common, and you get Rob, Bob, Beto, bert(?), etc
And a person with an M last name as well, it flows nicely with it too
Liam is nice though too. Stephen maybe?

Think of middle names too that flow well. though not used often, they can make a nice name good
Robert Allen Mahony
Liam Christopher Mahoney

Though some odd ones to consider; Gabriel, Conner/or, Riley, Dennis (too white though, and yes I know about dennis rodman), Milo (kinda a dogs name though)

I'm terrible with names, so I'm going to look around at what I see and suggest those as names.

Uhhh, CD, Clock, Remote, Window, Post-it, Photo, Calendar, Calculator, Headphones, Manga, Suitcase, Radeon, Pokéwalker.

Y'know what, I don't think it's working, so I'm just going to suggest Vasili, after Vasili Arkhipov. The man who supposedly saved the world after talking down the use of a nuclear strike on the US during the Cuban Missile Crisis when the sub he was in got hit by depth charges and was almost about to sink.

So maybe name him after someone who saved the world.

Although if that's the case, you should name him Snake, as he's saved the world, what?, three times or so?
