Don't forget Kaijuu movies. The whole bumbling scientist subplot is a Kaijuu movie staple.

Pacific Rim's main theme has been stuck in my head for a week now:

So far, this is my favorite version of the main theme:

It sounds just like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Watched it last night. Holy Hell, was that fun. At no point did the movie try to be something it wasn't. It was just about giant robots punching giant monsters and no major deviations from that. And all the little jokes (like that ticking office appliance) were there for a reason I figured: To remind you to not take the movie serious at all :D

Really? I missed that. Ugh, I was so glad they didn't kiss at the end, because to me they weren't a couple at all. Just two close friends.

My friend pirated/went to watch it again, and can confirm that that did not actually happen. It was three V formations that just happen to LOOK like it if you catch it at the right time.

Irritated Berkeley
Sprint Finger

What.

Anyway, this movie was amazing! I went expecting to watch some robots fight some aliens, and then I had actual emotional responses to the characters and the story, and I thought it was EXTREMELY well done! There were some issues, like, for instance, the name of one of the main Jaegers being a racial slur (g*psy)... but overall, it was one of the best summer blockbusters I've seen.

Also, this was my first time seeing a movie in 3D, and it was not as terrible as I've been lead to believe, so that's a nice surprise. Made me slightly nauseated when they were underwater, though.

But they spelled it different! That makes it ok right?

On a more serious note, I honestly forget there's any racial connotation to the word at all. I always considered it more a profession than a racial group as a kid. *comment not intended to play down seriousness of racial slur*

Yeeeeah, I know a lot of people in the U.S. don't think of that word as being a slur, but I still found its use pretty gross. :/ I'm not really qualified to say much about it though, cuz I'm not Romani, so I'd rather just end my part in the discussion here.

Reading through your suggested Jaeger names/abilities, I think you've failed to consider the best option.

Special Weapon: House Party Protocol

I personally didn't find it quite as amazing as some (and still reckon it falls below Iron Man 3), but I think I may have got rather overhyped at the prospect of giant robots punching giant monsters in the face so that I slightly forgot how to enjoy the spectacle of giant robots punching giant monsters in the face.

Watching giant robots punch giant monsters in the face in 3D was just awesome, no two ways about it. Plus, the inventiveness of the number of ways to attack/harm a giant monster kept it feeling new. Any failings in the characters or plot are only there because the combination of genres demands them - the scientist subplot was very silly, but it was intended thus.

In other words, it did exactly what it was meant to do, and it did it well.

Yes, I went in with the expectation of watching giant robots punch giant monsters in the face (and frankly, I was more excited about the giant monsters), and it definitely delivered that.

Iron Man 3? Probably the better movie, yes. I loved that movie, too. Went and saw it twice. But Pacific Rim was still AWESOME.

The twist in Iron Man 3 was pretty damn funny, and I loved the final battle. Were I given a choice of IM4 versus PR2, though, I think I'd want to see more of the newer IP. Iron Man feels like it's run out of steam for now.

I thought that after Iron Man 2, which just goes to show that 'running out of things to do with a franchise' is rarely an excuse given a skilled enough writing/directing team.

It's a little over sci-fi for me. A so-so movie if I would rate it.
