Knightmare! Oh, nasty!

Postby Drinnik » 05 Aug 2013, 07:22

Knightmare has had a one-off made for YouTube!

It is made of pure nostalgia and awesome. Seriously, they don't make kids' shows like this any more.

I know there's the YouTube thread, but I thought this deserved its own.

This was perhaps the best kids show of all time.

Why? Because it didn't patronise the kids too much.

"What is the Capital of France?"

You only got one life and there was no mercy.

Also everyone stayed in character, they made the world of Knightmare seem real.

Anyone in the UK might like to know that replays of Knightmare air Fridays 10:30 on Challenge.

I haven't seen this youtube version yet. I'm going to get my dinner and then sit down to watch it. : )

When they started showing this again on Challenge TV I would get home from 6th Form and watch it. Such a great show with a great intro.

Having watched this complete with it's retro CGI, I might have to see if I can get some of those re-runs.

I really wish they'd make some more now. I loved this show.

Y'know, I kind of hope they don't.

Since if you consider the state of other "revived" series, they're pretty awful.

Unless they guaranteed to stay relatively true to the original format, then I'd be behind it. Maybe if the made a new series on something like challenge, they might be able to do that. As I can imagine if ITV or BBC took it up they'd want to change it. Especially ITV, since they'd want to make crappy celebrity editions.

i cannot stress how much i adored this show as a kid. my love of rpgs and fantasy worlds can be traced back to that show.
i dont think it would work today though. in the 80s the World of knightmare was so much bigger and detailed than what kids could play at home. i dont see kids getting excited over a show like knightmare now when they have things like Skyrim at home.

I enjoyed that edition very much.
When it was on I was too young to enjoy it (I seemed to have missed out on a lot of classic Children's TV due to my age. I almost missed Pokemon even by being almost too old. I had Blue Peter and Playdays however...)

I think the brutality of the show is what makes it good. It's a challenge. You only have to make one mistake and it's game over. It's also not 'grim'. A lot of Children's TV had mock-peril that was grim and morbid. Knightmare was obviously fiction and didn't play the grimness too hard.

It depends whether today's quality of TV CGI has ruined children's patience with lower quality CGI. When we were young we didn't care/notice how bad it was. But was it because we had no comparison?

With the Skyrim argument, I sort of agree. But not every child have their own private access to a PC. Chances are the PC they use is the family's PC. If they have their own, that child is probably spoilt. This edition of Knightmare showed it was a very social game for the participants. Skyrim isn't social at all.

well i didn't mean just Skyrim, but its an example of how kids have access to games today with big detailed words and characters. i just don't see Knightmare making a splash today.

If it stays retro, I think it might work.

Also if you allowed young adults to play instead of kids, maybe that'll make a more of an impact. Since one of the weakest part of the show was the lack of engagement by the kids. Maybe adults could give more chatback.

The worst thing to do is aim it at the mainstream, since Knightmare isn't what is "cool" among kids mainstream.

I think if it was aimed at students and young people it'd be good.
There's not enough 'young people' entertainment that isn't about sex and drinking.

Firstly, I assume you mean young adults when you say young people, unless Balamory has really changed since I last saw it (is it even on anymore?). But yeah, I totally agree with you on this.

Especially as I'm someone who doesn't drink and isn't really into the whole sex thing. I'm like "Is this just how everyone is? Or how I'm meant to act?" Since I'm pretty sure neither is true.

And along with Knightmare, they could bring back Time Commanders (or whatever it was called) that used the Total War engine to challenge a team to fight a historical battle.

I think for the second series and afterwards. I can't remember who did the first series, but I'm sure it wasn't Richard Hammond.

Isn't everything hosted by Richard Hammond when Graham Norton isn't available?

To continue the joke I'd say Season 1 because it never gets aired.

Saw a series one episode of Robot Wars a few weeks back.

Hosted by Jeremy Clarkson... That was weird.

Robot Wars was entertaining when the Rounds were varying activities.
In till they decided to 'stream line' the format and just have loads of 1 V 1 fights.

I understand that's fairer, but it was less entertaining. You knew what would happen. Expensive as shit remote control vehicles would slice at each other in till one got eliminated. It got dull when EVERYTHING could run either-way up. It's like over time they perfected the optimum 'robot' design, so in the end they all looked so similar, and BORING.

I enjoyed the gimmick 'robots' like the giant SPHERE.
