Re: Tom Clancy RIP
His writing was so...yeah, and I just can't believe it.
Is this where I'm supposed to pretend I've read his books?
No offense to the man himself, it's always sad to lose a life.

I quite enjoyed his books as a teenager but I doubt I would like them as much now.

So who was hit harder by his death, his readers or the hundreds upon thousands of people who play games with his name on it?

Re: Tom Clancy RIP
As a gamer, me. What ever in put he had with his games they were of a decent quality. Recent Splinter Cells have been great.
Hunt for Red October was selling very well and it kept going when Reagan was seen walking with a copy.

Re: Tom Clancy RIP
Red Storm Rising was the first book in a long time that I could not put down and is still on my list of favorite books. I still plan to continue with the Ryan book, but hit a slow point.
That said he is a great author and will be missed.

I'm mainly sad because he was a fellow Baltimorean.

Having never read any of his work and knowing him solely for the Jack Ryan character, it's still sad news to me.
Re: Tom Clancy RIP
The Hunt for Red October is one of my favorite books and holds up in its own way over time. He was never as good after the Soviets weren't evil or didn't exist, but when the Soviets were evil ... wow, he wrote some good stuff.

Really enjoyed his works as a teen, great page-turners. I didn't agree with his politics, but a shame to see him go.

Wow! That's quite a shock, my dad was really into Clancy (didn't cared for the man himself though) so I ended up reading a bunch of his books.

Re: Tom Clancy RIP
It's a conspiracy - some 'grey' inhabitants of the Pentagon were getting belated revenge for him kicking over some of their poorly-concealed 'secret' rocks.
I grew up on Cold War Thrillers; by the time he came on the scene with his VERY thoroughly researched stories, he was a breath of fresh air...that came in from the cold.
He went too soon; the entertainment he gave so many earned him a happy, restful life that should have been longer.
Anyways, hope he's enjoying whatever's next for him!
Thank'ee, Mr. C! I'll miss ya!

Re: Tom Clancy RIP
I was reading up about the Tri-focal NVG used Splinter Cell a few days ago. Clancy told UbiSoft that the type Sam Fisher used (Thermal and Night Vision as one unit) didn't exist and should not be in the game. He was overruled and a few years later Northrop Grumman and ITT developed working versions of them. Not sure how directly inspired they could have been.

Yeah, I heard about this at work today. Know an awful lot of library patrons who are going to be very sad. Poor guy.

I can admit that I was really bummed hearing about his death. I remember doing a book report in 6th grade for Rainbow Six and my teacher asking me what I was doing reading it, goooood times. A good quarter of my book library through high school was his work, so he shall be missed by this one.
Re: Tom Clancy RIP
Tom Clancy was a great writer. I especially loved his NetForce series. A real shame that he's gone, but at least he's left behind an awesome legacy.

Re: Tom Clancy RIP
His stuff was excellent up until around the mid 90's until now when a good portion of his novels were mostly ghostwritten in his 'style'. Then it just got to be too much Tom Clancy market saturation for me.
That said, I have, and always will love his earlier stuff (and the movies based on them... but not you Sum of All Fears. You go sit in a corner and think about what you've done).

Re: Tom Clancy RIP
His eulogy was given by the USS Abraham Lincoln, with readings by an MP5, a reconnaissance satellite and an intelligence brief.
He habitually wears an expression as if he had determined to drive his head through a brick wall, and was about to do it (Description of U.S. Grant)

I agree with Red Storm Rising being one of the best books, even though it wasn't in the Executive Orders continuity. And it was clear that his personal/political views were different from mine, but damn could he tell a good tale.
Re: Tom Clancy RIP
First let me offer my sympathies to Tom Clancy's friends, family and fans.
So, you know how a lot of books open with a quotation, and often it's a quotation by Shakespeare in works where it's neither deserved nor thematically accurate? It's been my dream, ever since I read a hilarious critique of Twilight that suggested it, to one day publish a tome of classical poetry opening with a quotation by Tom Clancy detailing the technical specifications of a tomahawk helicopter.
But it wouldn't be funny now.
Mr Clancy's work meant nothing to me. I mean, I don't even know a single thing about it that I didn't assimilate by pop cultural osmosis. He was a joke, and a pretty tired joke too. But his death still affects me. There's probably something to learn from that
