What makes you shield your eyes?

Postby King Kool » 31 Oct 2013, 20:49

For Halloween, I just thought of this. On TV, someone just pretended to cut off their tongue. I have NEVER been able to handle that. I always look away. I mean, I look away from a lot of violence, but I just can't do that.

There's lots of other stuff (like any time anyone gets a shot, but that's a phobia, so hey), but that's one of the big ones. It doesn't have to be gross or horrifying, but what's the one thing you can't watch? What makes you shield your eyes?

Things happening to eyes is the big one for me. Particularly needles going into them. No problem with needles in general, but they can stay right away from the eyes.

Anything with fingers. Chopping the finger off, finger nail torture, etc, can't handle it.

Also I hate watching or even the sound of peopel cutting their fingernails.

You'd love a movie called Time for Revenge. Most realistic tongue-cutting after Oldboy.

Sons of Anarchy had 2 scenes last season I almost couldn't watch. One was a guy biting off his own tongue, helped by slamming his chin on a table. The other was a guy being forced to watch as someone burned his daughter alive.

Last time I deliberately NOT looked was the ending of The Conjuring. It's the very final shot of the movie and it's set up as such an obvious scare I thought, fuck your scare, I know it's coming and I'm not looking. To this day I don't know for sure if there was a scare or not. Judging from sound alone (plus audience reaction) I think there wasn't one. So it was one big trolling shot I guess.

I also remember THINKING about oovering my eyes when JC was getting whipped in Passion of the Christ, but I don't recall if I did it.

Basically any sort of graphic violence/mutilation makes me feel physically ill.

I saw that movie too and did basically the same thing. Almost every "scare" I looked away at the last second because I really hate being startled. I hate jump-scare films because I feel they're a lower form of horror so I try not to be freaked out.

Like others in this thread, I'm also squicked out by violence/injury like in Rush when Niki Lauda is in that fire and the whole recovery/bloody bandage/skin graft/lung vacuum thing. However, the weirder one for me is I can't really look at sex or romance in movies. Even when couples just kiss I tend to look away. Even when it's just a big swell of romantic music as the two leads gaze into each other's eyes or something. Even when I'm all alone, though for some reason this does not apply to porn or my own sex life.

Real body harm.

Intense pretend body harm.

Slapstick physical harm (like falling off something high onto the floor).

The scrotum of an old man.

That or any joint being dislocated. I know that pain so well.

Possibly because Porn does not have emotion. Passion and energy, yes, but not emotion.

Personally... I look away from humiliation, even in comedies. If the show is well written, and I'm relating to the character... I can't do it.

I also don't watch horror movies, but not because they scare me at the time -- I can look at it and say "it's a movie, it's fake" -- but because the concepts and characters sneak into my subconscious and give me night terrors.

Typically, any pain or torture that is slow...
Also, eye stuff.

Lotus seed pods. Makes no sense, but apparently is sort of a common thing to be creeped out by?
Sometimes when the ground gets frozen, the soil will swell up around gravel in that sort of pattern, it's unreasonably squicky.

I sort of get that, ultra-romancey earnest swelling emotion is super ick. Porn has very little beyond the purely physical and doesn't activate the same blergh response.

That part in Jackass where they intentionally paper cut their eyelids, under their fingernails and between their fingers and toes.

"Physical harm" magic tricks.
Magicians, why? Why would I want to see someone in danger? Stick to the incredibly ingenious slight of hand stuff that doesn't refer to death or body mutilation

Isn't that EVERYBODY, though? Cuz we all know what paper cuts feel like. I think you need to be stern to watch that.
