In the LRRcon thread, a few people expressed interest in coming in a day or two early and maybe staying for a couple days after so that they can check out Seattle. This is something I have a great interest in doing, so I figured I would start up a thread over here where it would get more attention seeing who is interested in doing that, where we would like to go, and maybe make hotel arrangements as well.

Personally I would like to go to Card Kingdom, and maybe also drive by the Strip Search house. And I would very much like to find someone who is willing to split a hotel room. Passkey doesn't seem to like me.

I'm planning on arriving on the 6th and leaving on the 13th, which is about the maximum I can wrangle off of work and allow myself to miss of college. I figure if I'm flying out I might as well make the most of the cost, right?

I was also thinking of going up to Vancouver or Victoria, or both, for day trips. Drop by the Moonbase?

I'm currently contemplating the various hotels. I'm also wondering how easy it is to get around the city without a car. It seems like the majority of the city's hotels (which are in the downtown area) are quite a ways from the venue (which is almost on top of the airport).

I'd like to take part, but I don't think I'll be there beyond the Friday-Sunday. Would definitely like to see a forum specific meetup of some sort during that time, however.

You'd probably be better off going to them for one night than day trips. It's around three hours to drive from Seattle to Vancouver, so without a car you're going to be spending more time in transit than in the cities.

Maybe if you look into ferries, you could take one from Seattle to Victoria, then there to Vancouver. I don't really know much about that option, though.

Side note, HOLY CRAP I just compared the views of Seattle and my home city at the same scale on Google Maps. SEATTLE'S DOWNTOWN CORE IS LARGER THAN MY ENTIRE CITY. WAT. 0.0

Yeah, I was going to mention that you might want to look at map scales before deciding on a day trip. You're probably looking at a good 3 - 4 hr travel time from Seattle to Victoria (2.5 - 3 hrs on the clipper according to Tourism Victoria), with limited trips per day.

For anyone coming from outside the US/Canada, please be advised that our countries are a lot larger than you may be expecting, and our cities tend to grow out instead of up. Things are likely a lot farther apart than you think.

That said, it sounds like the LRRcon hotel is on or near an LRT line so travel into Seattle proper should be reasonable or only slightly inconvenient. I hope.

For reference, Seattle has only a slightly larger population than Glasgow, but has covers twice the area. My little city in the middle of nowhere, which has fewer geographical constraints than Seattle, has a fifth of Manchester's population, but covers 25% more area.

If the entire world had the population density of Paris, France, the entire population of the US would fit into Texas(That's what I've heard anyway). So yeah -- as you're basically saying -- population densities are weird.

Actually, at the population density of Paris, the entire US population would fit into just over 2% of Texas.

According to Wikipedia, Paris has a population density of 21,000people/km², and the United States has a population of just under 318 million people. That gives an area of 15,127.8km². Texas has an area of 696,241km² (about 3 times the area of the UK).
The only States in which the entire population could not fit at that density are Connecticut (which just barely misses the mark), Delaware, and Rhode Island.

Note that I'm going by total area here, not just land area. Assume that we pave over all lakes and waterways in this scenario. Not that it would make much difference in the case of Texas.

For yet another method of comparison, try this chart from Wikipedia. The United States is pretty easy to find on it. Try to find the UK on there (or any European country other than Russia, for that matter).
