Bay Area LRR Appreciators August Meetup (BALRRAAM)

Postby Papperslappen » 03 Jul 2014, 17:24

EDIT:
If you are thinking about showing up. Fill in the RSVP form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QIweye ... U/viewform
--
EDIT: The poll decided that August 16 is the best date.
--
I suddenly realized that I've lived in the SF bay area for over a year now and hardly know anyone.
I figured that if I'm going to meet random people from the internet, I might as well do it from one of the nicest online communities there is (as you can see, I'm not an avid forum user, but I trust that you are as nice here as in the LRR twitch chat).

Date: August 16.

Time: Noonish - Bedtimeish?

Place: Borderlands Cafe ( https://www.google.com/maps/place/Borde ... febc243269 )

I come to the SF Bay area every 3 to 4 months for work. If I can find out the date of the next one, I'm game.

I don't forum much (I'm a regular lurker in the DB chat), but I am a denizen of the Bay and I'd be down for this. I've got school obligations on the 9th and possibly 30th, and I usually work every Saturday until about 4 in the afternoon, but other than that I'm pretty open.

Also pretty relaxed with activities, and know some (a single) places to drink (really good) beer (that is half a block from CalTrain but also super busy on weekends). Although I would request no large-scale MtG, please. I know how to play but it's not my thing.

Also I can bring baked goods. Baked goods are my thing.

Been in SF the last 6 months, visiting home for first half of Aug though.

Also not super into magic, beer&games sounds good though.

Another DB Chat person, from LA but planning to visit SF in August, so this is a nice coincidence

Nice to see that there is some interest at least. I'll advertise this forum thread in twitch chat on monday as well.

I have no idea how many checks I've had to rewrite because I got the date wrong.

I'm in the Bay Area but I might move to Portland. Will try to make it if I'm still here in August.

I don't know if this is the best place to say this, but you're the locals. If anyone is interested, my senior project group is having a fundraiser event Saturday August 9th, $10 kickball and BBQ funtimes. Hotdogs and hamburgers, etc. That's my school obligation that locks me out of that day  Feel free to PM me if you want some more info!

The poll decided on the 16th is a good date so I think we run with that.
Next thing to decide where to be.
If we are going to play boardgames, we need some kind of indoorish area with enough seats, do anyone of you know of such a place? Unfortunately my apartment is a bit too small to host more than 3 people.

Some gaming stores let people use their tables sometimes, maybe that's an option?

I know that pretty much everything at SFSU will be closed, but maybe another college campus has an area open that day? My only real preference on location is something easily accessible by public transit. (Defining "public transit" as anything that accepts Clipper Card.)

I mean, I know Games of Berkeley is good, but I've never personally used their gaming area, so I wouldn't know how to go about doing that.

I've heard that EndGame in Oakland is quite good. According to their webpage, their tables are bookable and they seems to be free on the 16th. http://www.endgameoakland.com/event-calendar/ perhaps it could be an alternative. Unfortunately i guess we miss out on the beer in the beer and boardgames concept (maybe I was the only one for beer).

I don't drink but it's fine with me if other people do, as long as it's not ALL we're doing.

Hey so I was just chatting with our SoCal friends, of which at least one will be roadtripping up, and I was thinking maybe if we can't find a place that can accommodate both games and beers, we can start with a games places and move to a refreshments and edibles locale afterwards? Just thoughts! I like having plans set in advance otherwise I get twitchy

Sorry for not replying on this thread recently.
Anyway, I've been keeping an eye out (googling around) for suitable places. From what I can see, local game groups seems to either go to cafes, game stores or community centers/libraries/churches.
Of these alternatives, I think I would prefer a cafe since it is a bit more of a casual environment than a game store and it require minimal planning ahead.
I know of a quite decent cafe with fairly large tables in Mountain View but I guess that a lot of you prefer somewhere reachable by BART.
I prefer the magic thrill of deciding things just in time, but for Betsys and everyone else's nerves, the deadline for finding a locale is this friday.

Once we have an initial locale I'm down to go with the flow, it's just that first time and place that's key.

I don't know where most people are, or where our out-of-towners are staying, but I'm in upper Peninsula so I can pretty easily get almost anywhere with little hassle. In fact, the one bar I know of that is really good is actually in Redwood City, so I was already prepared to brave CalTrain.

Any preferences on location?

Just talking with a couple people, including Kid about road tripping on up there. So we would also appreciate some decision of place.

Fayili,

Interested? Rob and I are considering it.
