Keab-Shaming
Keab-Shaming
So earlier this week I fired up Netflix and it suggested I watch Airplane!. I then realised that I had never done so before and proceeded to sit and enjoy myself as I'm a big Leslie Nielsen fan.
My admission of this being my first watching at the age of 28 caused some consternation on Twitter, especially as other people realised I had also missed out on other "classic" films.
So now that I've admitted I have some gaps in my movie-watching history I'd like you guys to suggest titles of "classic" films that you think everybody should have watched. I'll compile a list and then for the ones I haven't seen I'll endeavour to watch at least once a week and report back.
List so far:
Pan's Labyrinth - Seen many times. Own on DVD
AntiTrust
Tron
Batteries Not Included
Be Kind Rewind
Free Enterprise
Office Space
Logan's Run
Robots
Short Circuit
Spaceballs - Another favourite in my collection
The Mask
Total Recall - Original or Remake? I've seen the remake...
Timeline
TMNT
TMNT2
Lethal Weapon! All of them!
Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers.
Demolition Man. Mad Maxx.
Escape from New York
Escape from LA.
Judge Dredd

Airplane 2 is NOT that bad. It's only a 1-watch, though, in my book, and I wouldn't re-watch it. It's meh, but worth a look if you're bored. Don't prioritize it above anything else though.
Also, Total Recall is original. The remake is nothing like it.

Re: Keab-Shaming
depending on how black you like your comedy (also if you dont mind subtitles), there's "Kontroll", which is a Hungarian film about ticket inspectors
On a lighter note, but again with subtitles is "Panique Au Village!", which is French stop motion, at which you will laugh your socks off,
So aside from the international cinema shaming (I swear I'm not a hipster, I don't even owna beret)
"Life of Brian" I hope you've watched,
Also "Adolf Hitler: My part in his downfall" (Which I haven't seen, but the book was excellent, so I dunno, book shaming? Though the film will be quicker to digest, probably)

I've read as many of Milligan's autobiographies as I could get from the local library. They made me cry and laugh in equal measure. One day I want to own a set.

Re: Keab-Shaming
I feel like I should make up one of these threads, considering I've only seen four of those movies. There's also the other big-name movies that should likely be on the list of 'everyone has seen but me.' Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lord Of The Rings, etc, etc. The ones people don't even think about because they usually just assume everyone has already seen them.
As for my own suggestions:
Monty Python And The Holy Grail (surprised this has yet to be mentioned)
Monty Python's Meaning Of Life
And Now For Something Completely Different (If you haven't seen Monty Python's Flying Circus yet, then this should be on there, though the show is worth checking out after)
Thank You For Smoking (A personal favorite of mine)
Hot Fuzz/Shaun of the Dead
Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
Stranger Than Fiction

Re: Keab-Shaming
Looking through my meagre collection for ones that haven't been mentioned yet... not necessarily "classics" but recommended all the same.
Back To The Future (I showed this to my father for the first time recently... his response: "So what's where that 'flux capacitor' reference is from...")
Galaxy Quest
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
Memento
Men in Black (just the first one... the sequels are mediocre... maybe worth watching once)
Primer
Also: call me crazy but I enjoyed Flying High 2. Sure it's not as good as the original, but there's still some funny bits in there.

I nearly mentioned this myself. But my problem with the movie is that it seems like it'd be kind of... eh without the show. And if you've seen the show, chances are good you watched the movie. The movie goes in assuming you've seen Firefly. Which if you haven't, you should anyways. It's only one season. But that's not actually a bad thing. It makes the movie a lot more stream-lined. I just wouldn't recommend it without the 'source material' first.

Dr. Strangelove
Dread (Yes, the remake - in 3D, if possible)
Gravity (Again, in 3D)
Cube
Outland
Wages of Fear
Blues Brothers
Dark Star
A Fistful of Dollars
Solaris (2002)
Cloud Atlas
And, if you're up for some 90s Canadian TV, Due South. Seriously, watch this one. For real - number one recommendation. Hell, you like Leslie Nielsen? He's in some episodes.

Flags of our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
I suggest you watch the two back to back, because they cover the same event, just from different points of view.

Oh! How much of Studio Ghibli's work have you watched? (These are generally available dubbed if you don't like subtitles)
I'd say definitely watch
Spirited Away,
Graveyard of the Fireflies, (Warning: this one is.... not as lighthearted as the others)
The Secret World of Arriety
Princess Mononoke
My Neighbour Totoro
Laputa Castle in the Sky (starring the voiceover talents of Mark Hamill in the dubbed, iirc)
Also, for me, my granddad gave me a few of Spike's war autobiographies, they are indeed amazing books

I actually did that. Still haven't seen Firefly. Movie was good, and I liked all the characters except for that idiot captain. Hated him.
