So earlier this week I fired up Netflix and it suggested I watch Airplane!. I then realised that I had never done so before and proceeded to sit and enjoy myself as I'm a big Leslie Nielsen fan.

My admission of this being my first watching at the age of 28 caused some consternation on Twitter, especially as other people realised I had also missed out on other "classic" films.

So now that I've admitted I have some gaps in my movie-watching history I'd like you guys to suggest titles of "classic" films that you think everybody should have watched. I'll compile a list and then for the ones I haven't seen I'll endeavour to watch at least once a week and report back.

Airplane 2 is NOT that bad. It's only a 1-watch, though, in my book, and I wouldn't re-watch it. It's meh, but worth a look if you're bored. Don't prioritize it above anything else though.

Also, Total Recall is original. The remake is nothing like it.

depending on how black you like your comedy (also if you dont mind subtitles), there's "Kontroll", which is a Hungarian film about ticket inspectors

On a lighter note, but again with subtitles is "Panique Au Village!", which is French stop motion, at which you will laugh your socks off,

So aside from the international cinema shaming (I swear I'm not a hipster, I don't even owna beret)

"Life of Brian" I hope you've watched,

Also "Adolf Hitler: My part in his downfall" (Which I haven't seen, but the book was excellent, so I dunno, book shaming? Though the film will be quicker to digest, probably)

I've read as many of Milligan's autobiographies as I could get from the local library. They made me cry and laugh in equal measure. One day I want to own a set.

I feel like I should make up one of these threads, considering I've only seen four of those movies. There's also the other big-name movies that should likely be on the list of 'everyone has seen but me.' Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lord Of The Rings, etc, etc. The ones people don't even think about because they usually just assume everyone has already seen them.

As for my own suggestions:

I nearly mentioned this myself. But my problem with the movie is that it seems like it'd be kind of... eh without the show. And if you've seen the show, chances are good you watched the movie. The movie goes in assuming you've seen Firefly. Which if you haven't, you should anyways. It's only one season. But that's not actually a bad thing. It makes the movie a lot more stream-lined. I just wouldn't recommend it without the 'source material' first.

I actually did that. Still haven't seen Firefly. Movie was good, and I liked all the characters except for that idiot captain. Hated him. Rest was good, though.
