Yeah, see, Nathan Fillion's Mal's flippant attitude is explored in a little more depth in the series.

Platoon - oops, missed Geoff recommending this.

Because, from only watching Serenity, he seems like a stupid jerk that I wouldn't want to serve under. I mean, I find him funny rarely, but most of the time, he's just being the boss to be the boss, rather than to actually move things along.

I am seeing an unfortunately high number of movies listed here that I've never seen.

As for two I don't think I've seen mentioned:
Die Hard (...With a Vengeance is really good too)
Terminator (and Judgement Day)

Both movies I went into expecting dumb 80s action based on what little I knew of them, and came out surprised that wasn't the case, but having thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I've seen Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, and Fight Club. That's close enough to half, right?

To be fair, he's the boss because he is the owner of the ship and whatnot. But I think I understand what you mean. Without stuff that came from episodes like War Stories, Ariel, Serenity (the pilot), and The Message, he kind of comes off as just the unexplained accepted leader in the movie. In the show, it shows him sticking his neck out for the crew (including the Tams) and generally acting as a military man who views the crew as his... 'men' for lack of a better term. In the movie, he has a few funnier moments overall. But he quickly becomes more of a hardass and then snaps a bit to become the 'badass captain' role. Which kind of makes him a bland character without the backstory the show gives.

That said, I feel like all of the characters are expanded on in the show. So there's that.

Surprising. I wasn't honestly sure if I should've listed it, because it's one of those cultural things that seems to so heavily permeate everyday culture that I just took it as something everyone had, at some point in their life, seen.

Kind of like The Lion King, as was mentioned earlier in the thread (and someone hadn't seen that either).

I guess I'm just gonna take away "don't assume anything" from this, and be glad I listed it.

OT: All of those movies I listed really are quite spectacular, in my opinion, for what it's worth, so if you ever find yourself with access to one and a few hours of free time, I'd say give them a shot.

Well, to be honest, at this point of 'cultural permeation' you probably know 90% of the film's plot and dialogue without having seen it.

It's archetypal space opera, and would seem horribly cliche now, but it WAS kinda revolutionary in its field (no film before had squeezed SO MANY CLICHES into two hours...and apart from the "<movie> Movie" movies, I don't think any have SINCE ;) )

It's like a comfortable old t-shirt - the logo is anachronistic and pretty much irrelevant, but it's dependable. :)

That, and it forced technical innovation that all of cinema owes a fair bit to...

I think Star Wars was revolutionary for is Special Effects and quality sets much more than for anything in its story or acting. Especially when you consider that he and his wife reshot most of the effects just a couple months before release. I cant recall exactly what it was but something along the lines of he showed up at the SFX studio a week before the deadline and said "show me what you have" and they showed him three of the three hundred shots they were supposed to have done and they were all crap so he fired them and did it while editing.

It's also revolutionary for making merchandising an important part of the industry (which means you can thank it for Cars 2).

I have these Keab, so if you want to borrow any of them just shout (although I only have the directors cut of Das Boot...shame, shame, I know), I particularly recommend Battle of Britain, Das Boot, The Longest Day and Zulu, The Dam Busters is also very good, I have Tora! Tora! Tora! too which is very good, a sort of 'The Longest Day' but with Pearl Harbour instead of D-Day.
I also have Band of Brothers which doesn't really count as a film but is definitely worth watching.

You want to borrow any, just shout. :)
