The thing is, wolf, when people say "You have to man up" or "be a man" or "Not a real woman", etc, these are not comments that a person is acting childish, they are saying you are acting too much like the other gender (according to societal gender roles). That is, they are saying "Be a man [not a woman]", rather than "Be a man [not a boy]".

Ultimately, aside from a few biological differences, men and women are not "distinct and different", and, for the most part should be "lumped together". Duckay's point, if I understand it correctly, is not that men and women are very different, but that people (and society as a whole) treat men and women very differently.

"Defocus and all you can see is us."

first paragraph. That's exactly the point I'm making? gender is commonly the defined as opposite of the other sex, when it needs to mean opposite of a child. It's unhealthy to differentiate it as opposite of "opposite sex".

second. Until we ascend to be clouds of ethereal consciousness and dispose of our earthly bodies those physical traits will continue to differentiate us, but those differences don't define us. I guess my point is to suppress that seems unhealthy. Gender is inherent to the human condition. Ignoring it seems carless.

It's not about suppressing it, it's about there being no point in brining it up in the first place. Under what (non-medical, non-romantic) circumstance would someone's gender be relevant to a conversation?

EDIT: Just to be clear, while this is the standard I hold myself to, and and ideal I think we should work towards, one still needs to be aware that other people make a big deal of gender (hence... all of this thread) and one can't just ignore that when interacting with them.

Oh my fucking head.

To summarise that infographic:

Zoe Quinn slept with five guys! What a [word deleted]! We're all going to talk about her sex life! She got a bunch of commented deleted when we were talking about her sex life! Also gaming journalism corruption!

Sigh. Look, the Reddit thing is genuinely the stuff of a story. That deleting should be done publicly, not in secret. But still. What a fucking nothingburger.

Why are men's suicide rates higher?
Why have boys increasingly began dropping out of high school at much faster rates than girls?
why are there so few young men that finish with college degrees?
Why do young men live at home with there parents longer than women?

gender is absolutely relevant in everyday conversation.

OK, what the bus is this crap about Maya? It's probably just a bunch of conspiracy theorist pins and yarn strung together, but how much of it is even true in the first place?

Can you sum it up so we don't give it more views? Judging from the intro and the comments, this guy is a pile of bullshit anyway. I'm pretty sure Felix isn't at the heart of some secret cabal any more than Anita Sarkeesian is, though.

To answer your questions, we look at a quote from my previous post:

"Why are men's suicide rates higher?"
other people make a big deal of gender

"Why have boys increasingly began dropping out of high school at much faster rates than girls?"
other people make a big deal of gender

"why are there so few young men that finish with college degrees? "
other people make a big deal of gender

"Why do young men live at home with there parents longer than women?"
other people make a big deal of gender

Basically, the cause of all of these thing is people treating men an women differently. So maybe we shouldn't.

(Yes, I'm aware I'm being glib)

TLDW on what he says - Click to Expand
Maya helped Zoe Quinn Doxx and DDOS the Fine Young Capitalists.
Maya works for Silverstring Media, and thus, is directly connected to the PR departments of many news outlets, like Gamasutra, Destructoid, Kotaku, etc.
These news outlets covered the Independent Games Festival.
According to Eron, the exBF of Zoe, Maya has had sexual relations with IGF chair, Brandon Boyer.
August through December is the IGF's nomination period.
January through March is the IGF's judging period.
Maya and Brandon sent flirtatious tweets back and forth all through this period.
Brandon Boyer has "total control over who wins the IGF."
According to Eron, Maya is very close with people who were the winners of the IGF.
The winners of the IGF are friends with Brandon Boyer.
Silverstring Media, who Maya works for, has direct ties to the IGF winners.
(Silverstring CEO Lucas Johnson wrote for Extrasolar and for Crypt of the NecroDander, both of which made IGF finalist. NecroDancer was also written by Silverstring CCO Andrew Wilson.)

The Rotting Cartridge, an indie game developer who is apparently not affiliated with this group of people, complained about what happened to their game "Kale in Dinoland" when it was reviewed for IGF. Of the 8 judges, 1 never installed the game, 2 others installed but never played it, 4 played it for less than 5 minutes each only a few days before the deadline, and only 1 actually played it for any significant amount of time: 52 minutes.

The IGF's parent company is the GDC.
GDC owns Gamasutra.
Gamasutra's news director is Leigh Alexander.
Leigh Alexander worked on Extrasolar.
Extrasolar was also an IndieCade finalist.
Maya and Robin Arnott are chair members of IndieCade.

Indie Devs paid $100 to enter the IGF. The winners got at least $2000 each, along with boosted press coverage and sales. Thus, if you're not in Maya's "group," you don't get the money or fame.

Eron also said that Zoe cheated on him with Maya.
He said that Maya and Zoe were flirting with each other on Twitter while he was having panic attacks.
He said that when Zoe said she "deleted Robin's and [name removed]'s logs because they say 'I love you' when they say goodbye" that the name removed was Maya's.

Granted, in all of this, the video seems more like an attack on Brandon than Maya, since Brandon's the one who runs the IGF and makes the decisions for it. The video is saying that he should have no relation, personal or professional, with the people who have direct ties to indie devs.

The way he's talking though just reminds me of Rodriguez and Riley of Rapidfire, just linking this to that, to the other thing, sometimes with only the most tenuous connections.

I think what this "gentleman" is missing, is that Maya sends flirty tweets to LITERALLY EVERYONE.

Me, Matt, James, Kathleen, James' dog, Ash, Ash's dog, the entire staff of Cards Against Humanity, indie devs, random artists, passing ships, motes of dust…

That is the dumbest basis for aaaaanything.

Also that video is full of BS, so whatever.

Gonna agree with the R&R comparison. My 'favorite' part of the video is when he introduces the tweets as evidence if romance or a platonic relationship then immediately drops the second half of that statement for the remainder of the video.

Yeah, this dude's tin-foil-hat paranoid: I just checked my old twitter account (that I think I only ever use about once a year to hype Desert Bus), and yeah, without following Maya, I've got her tweets on my feed with my handle.

Guess I'm part of the Grand Conspiracy Against Him. :P
(despite never having heard of him until maybe ten min ago)

This kind of stuff is why a nomination-stuffing campaign organised by Larry Correia put Vox Day on the Hugo Awards Ballot. Vox Day is the one who was expelled from the SFWA for using their resources to promote and distribute his racist sexist rants and blogposts. Vox Day and Corrria were nominated in the campaign along side a slate of candidates to "balance out the left-wing bias" and demonstrate that the Hugo Ballots were fixed. Because, if they were nominated of course they'd win because The People Are Behind Us, so there was a big conspiracy to keep right wing authors from being nominated. Some of the people on Correia's slate were not actually happy with being on it.

So Correia made a big show of getting enough supporting members to put in a nomination, and managed to get enough that his slate made the cut-off for many categories to be put on the final ballot.

They were of course roundly defeated at the final awards ballot. Speeches at the Hugo Awards this year used the word 'Inclusivity' and 'Proving them wrong' a lot. (And also Cory Doctorow wearing a cape and goggles, but that's not relevant.) As the detailed vote breakdown is issued immediately after the ceremony, the Hugo Awards Party was full of people toasting "No Award" for getting a few hundred more votes than Vox Day had, making him one of the few ever nominated to come absolute dead last in the ballot behind those voting not to award anyone.

Correia claims of course that this is a victory in demonstrating how the Hugo voting membership is biased, that the whole thing has been taken over by Social Justice Warriors, and this is just showing how irrelevant those awards are to the *real* readers of Science Fiction.

What also makes me super sad about this thing is, that the co-founder, publisher and general manager of The Escapist, Alexander Macris calls his publication "gamergate-friendly" and praises gamergate's "noble accomplishment". Which means I'm really torn about not wanting to support a publication like that and wanting to support you guys and your videos on that site. :/
