Firbozz, I wasn't following him (I am now), but you'll be unsurprised to find he gets retweeted into my twitter feed quite a bit.

OK, so one person does not represent all of Gamergate. And I'm really heartened that everyone pretty much immediately called him out as a fucking moron.

But holy shit.

So, grats on Rantic Marketing for proving me wrong. There are worse assholes on the net than 4chan.

I have no love for 4chan, but I have now active, burning hatred for Rantic.

They do realise that even if they did shut down 4chan, the people who use the website would still exist right? If someone wanted to continue to leak "hacked" photos it would still happen...right?

I have a sneaky suspicion that Rantic Marketing doesn't want to shut down 4Chan for any good reasons, but rather because the owner of the site put his foot down and said that the shit that had been going on on his site wasn't allowed, which pissed off a lot of #GamerGate folk.

Why would anyone want to shut 4chan down? I think the reasonable position is accountability, not censorship.

(Not that 4chan would survive if posters had to answer for what they post.)

I think it's bad to clump 4chan up as a whole though. Sure there are members of that place that do shit things, but I also know several people who hang around /tg(and I also know these people wouldn't condone the harassment that have been going on) and when I asked one of them about #GamerGate he barely even knew what it was, just that it was some sort of anti-feminist group that was stirring up drama on the internet.

And then it turns out that the Rantic site is run by Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian, or better known as Zanita Quikessian, DUN DUN DUN!

Because who else would say "Hopefully 4chan users will convert to feminism right before it goes down."? [Link]

The conspiracy is true I tell you!

Meh; based on the inconsistent things being put out, I wouldn't rule out hacking by MRADs in an attempted disinformation ploy.

So this article was actually really good (though I would voice strong disagreement with the individual on page 8).

I can only imagine the comments are fucking nightmare, though.

So, I spent a few hours reading all the comments on that escapist piece. They were actually decent, once you get past the complaints of them not knowing what gamergate is "really" about. The discussion on the difficulty of pulling out the actual good points of gamergate was interesting.

Well, if you don't want a group that uses the fact that its associates are a vaguely defined collective to avoid responsibility for their actions to use your association with them to help them avoid responsibility for those of their actions you disagree with, maybe it's time to think about how badly you want to associate yourself with them.

GamerGate might of started on 4Chan but it isn't 4chan, the owner of the site made that pretty damn clear when he laid the smackdown on people using 4chan for harassment. It's a generalization, and that's why I'll keep insisting that it's bad to do it. Of course you can keep generalizing it as 4chan as a whole if you wish, I was just letting it be known that I disagree with doing so.

True, the generalization only helps those behind gamergate, but my question is how do you stop them from making the generalization and announce to everyone how it's not their fault, look at all those other Anonymous? Try to insist "not all 4chan" or just don't be a part of 4chan, which would also have the positive side effect of reducing the influence of 4chan on the world?

As I'm not part of 4chan I can't really answer that question, but as a mentioned, the ones I'd spoken to that hang around /tg didn't really have a grasp on what GamerGate was and weren't that interested in getting involved.

It's also inaccurate to claim it's all of 4chan seeing as the GamerGate movement have basically gotten the boot from there and are now attempting to find a new place to gather and rally to a cause. If you want to hear 'not all 4chan' you need only look to the statement by the owner of 4chan to get it. It isn't what he created 4chan for, it's far from the only way it's being used.
