Making it the first country to do so. The final tally isn't in for every area, but it's looking like a landslide victory. I'm so proud and so happy right now.

Re: Ireland Approves Marriage Equality by Popular Vote
When I was talking with that old man who was trying to get in my pants in Cork, Steve, had told me that it was going to pass.
Well done Ireland.
I think France allowed gay marriage first. Could be wrong.

I'm glad it's not illegal for people of same sex to be married.
I hope this doesn't get referenced in my Homegroup on Tuesday since it's not an amazing place for me to argue about homosexuality.

The Netherlands, 2001. Followed by Belgium, Ontario, and BC in 2003. Then a bunch of other sub-national jurisdictions, and a bunch of national jurisdictions (Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, Denmark, and Brazil).
France only legalized same-sex marriage in 2013.

But none of those were by popular vote; that's what I was pointing out.

Quite right. I was just pointing out the correct order of legalization (though, as you say, not by plebiscite).

But the vote was only done because a referendum is required to ammend the constitution

Re: Ireland Approves Marriage Equality by Popular Vote
Yeah, but most of the countries (or states) that now have marriage equality have a vocal portion of the population who like to talk about how it was forced on them and doesn't reflect their views, or that it's pandering to the PC crowd and the majority of citizens don't want it. This way, we got to see that a large majority of the voting population was in favour, and it was really, really great.
On a personal level, it helps to reassure me that the country to which I'm moving is likely to be accepting on a personal level as well as a legal one, and that's really nice.

Was happy to see this was a landslide vote, because of all the things Fayili has already mentioned.

I was in Dublin on Saturday, and the atmosphere there was electric. Seeing the spread of votes coming in from the different regions was incredible. Proud to call this country home

Well, not to put a negative spin, but you could also view this as the government lagging far behind the people
Semi-related I found this XKCD interesting in regards to the US;
https://xkcd.com/1431/
Their government used to be ahead of popular opinion on civil rights, now it seems to be behind.
