Postby Elomin Sha » 12 Jul 2015, 16:10

Nintendo's president passed away at 55 11th July 2015. He'll be sorely missed.

Somehow I managed to go my whole gaming life never getting drawn into the Nintendo ecosystem (Sega, and then PC). No idea who Iwata was. But, the outpouring of love for him on my twitter feed makes me kinda wish I had. It feels like I missed out on something truly special.

 He wasn't that old...

May his passing have been painless (or as much as possible), and my gratitude for what he gave us is manifold.

He changed the world. And it won't be the same without him.

May he rest in peace.

Man... that's too young. :(

Edit: and now that I've caught up on Twitter after being away all day, and been reminded of all the fun he brought to video games, that comment doesn't even seem sufficient. I've been meaning to replay the original Super Mario Bros. for a while now... tonight seems like a good time to do that.

Mr. Iwata & is professional life is something that those in the industry strive to become. He started as a programmer / developers during the NES era (with Balloon Fight being his game) & rose through the ranks & eventually broke through the executive levels to become Nintendo 1st public president (albeit the 4th over the history of the company, as Nintendo previously family run by the Yamauchi family).

As the famous saying (& retellings) from Mr. Iwata was that he was President on his business card, a Developer in his mind & a Gamer in his heart... which you can see reflected during his tenure as president of NCL.

I know this isn't probably the best time for a shameless plug, but I'm dedicating my next Twitch broadcast to Mr. Iwata by playing a selection of games he took a part of (prior to becoming president of NCL). I just can't see any better way to honor him by enjoy the games he help make a reality.

Iwata was one of the rare bread of CEO's who "knew shit". He got his hands dirty with code when required. He was far from just management, he worked his way up and understood how things worked.

For me though I will miss his Iwata Asks series;

These gave fascinating insights into the development of many iconic games and I recommend people take a look at them, at least for any game they have enjoyed.

I will also miss his surreal humor showcased in the Nintendo Direct presentations.

We should all take a minute silence to appreciate the man.....while staring at a banana.

The other benefit of Iwata, if his company wasn't doing well he didn't give himself a raise, he took a pay cut and made the other boardmembers do so.

The N64 was my first console, and now that I'm reading more about the man, I will really miss his attitude, his efforts to try to bring gaming to everyone. I hope Nintendo will be able to carry on this legacy.

Something I just discovered about his technical genious.

With Pokemon Gold/Silver he managed to compress 8MB of data into 2MB, something Gamefreak wasn't able to do. Johto was originally took up the entire cart and he managed a 4:1 compression, and add Kanto. That was done in his spare time.

What gets me the most about Iwata's death is that I think the gaming world lost a very important voice. Iwata was one of the few truly influential people in the industry who spoke out in favour of making gaming more inclusive, rather than limiting the experience to a narrow audience, which seems to be the trend (pandering to "hardcore gamers", "PC gamers", whatever other label of exclusivity people adopt). I really like this quote from him:

"As we spend more time and money chasing exactly the same players, who are we leaving behind? Are we creating games just for each other? Do you have friends and family members who do not play video games? Well, why don't they? And, I would ask this: how often have you challenged yourself to create a game that you might not play?"

I think Iwata had a great vision and I certainly hope Nintendo still dares to be different than the rest even with their new CEO.

RIP Mr Iwata.

Agreed very much.
"I dont play games" is a much more common statement then "I dont listen to music" or "I don't watch movies". It shouldn't be.

Its got better, but its still a fairly narrow medium, and we need people that have the vision to keep at least parts of it accessible to new players.
Critically though - and heres what some company's didn't understand back in the DS/Wii launch days - its not about "easy" or "cheap". Accessible doesn't mean you just pump out any old crap.
