Is it just me, or did LRR do a mash-up of that very video?

Or am I thinking of someone else?

Ah, the 50's... the period when people were too stupid to realize radioactivity was dangerous and stuck radium nodules up people's noses to deal with adenoids. O'course, it took the Navy till the 90's to stop that...

Watch out Timmy it's THE ATOMIC BOMB! Every time I watch this I always picture the teacher in the classroom just yelling "DUCK AND COVER!" randomly throughout the day. Oh and the guy flinging himself from the tractor always kills me.

Too much awesome for just one 1950's education film reel.

I was wondering what would happen if the bus driver ducked and covered, without stopping the bus first.
"I swear it," said the other mother. "I swear it on my own mother's grave."

"Does she have a grave?" asked Coraline.

"Oh yes," said the other mother. "I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back."

When some says duck and cover most people on the coast would think of an earthquake rather than a nuclear blast.

A sheet of paper will block most of the least dangerous radiation, alpha radiation. However to block beta, gamma and neutron radiation much thicker shielding is need as they are much more energetic.

In a nuclear blast there are a few major hazards. Most of the power of the blast goes into the shockwave. This shockwave is much more powerful than a hurricane and will knock down buildings. A large amount of electromagnetic radiation is produced, causing fires and burns close to the blast. An electromagnetic pulse occurs knocking out electrical equipment. Finally a large amount of ionizing radiation and radioactive debris is produced.

Near the blast you are proper fucked unless you are shielded by a few meters of re enforced concrete and have your own air supply.

Farther away from the blast most of the danger comes from the shockwave. Ducking and covering (and holding on to something) is a good idea as it is in a earthquake as it reduces injuries for flying and objects.

There are three things you can do to reduces exposure to radiation. Reduce the time you are in contact with the radiation. Increase the distance from the radiation. Shield your self.

While ducking and covering is not going to save you if a nuke goes off right above you it increases you chances of surviving if you are farther away.

The FEMA website encourages people to duck and cover in the event of a nuclear blast.

We are all made of star dust. However we are also made of nuclear waste.
