Stephen Colbert vs The Decemberists
Stephen Colbert vs The Decemberists
So, a little while ago, the Decemberists posted a raw, green-screened music video, and offered fans the option of creating their own versions of it.

Stephen Colbert noted on his show sometime later that the Decemberists were, in fact, copying his own green-screen challenge from some time ago, giving the band a verbal smack-around, and challenging fans to animate him into the Decemberists' video.

The Decemberists retaliated in turn, posting a counterattack on pitchforkmedia.com, and challenging Colbert to a guitar solo competition to determine true internet supremicy. . . or something.
link #3
Colbert, of course, has accepted.

So now, given the choice between two opposing media forces, both of whom I love . . . who do I get behind? Who will YOU support in this monumental clash of the titans (guitar skills aside)?

Yeah, if Colbert has the devil backing him up, it might be a difficult fight for Colin Meloy. However, if you've heard The Tain, you know that Meloy is no stranger to metal, albeit oldschool Sabbath-style metal. It could be a close one.
The best part about this is that it's taking place on my birthday!

"I swear it," said the other mother. "I swear it on my own mother's grave."
"Does she have a grave?" asked Coraline.
"Oh yes," said the other mother. "I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back."

Hmm. It is difficult for me to suggest a song because I love them all so much... but I will pick one from every album that I feel really embodies the Decemberists.
Her Majesty: The Soldiering Life is my favourite, but Red Right Ankle, Billy Liar, or The Chimbley Sweep are amazing (honestly, I cannot really pick a song off this album. I love every song so very, very much).
Castaways and Cutouts: July, July! or The Legionnare's Lament
Picaresque: The Mariner's Revenge or We Both Go Down Together
The Tain: The Tain
Crane Wife: Sons and Daughters
Best CD overall: probably Her Majesty is my favourite. Picaresque comes in a close second, though.
That is all of their CDs. If they have other CDs that I don't know about, I will be very, very happy to find them.
Did I go into too much depth? Probably.
Do I really want to listen to the Decemberists now? Holy crap yes.
On a completely different note, can I please say that it makes me so very, very sad that my mother has seen the in concert FOUR times and I have NEVER seen them in concert because their Toronto concerts have always been 19+?

Dana, from what I've showed you, you liked them. Seriously, they are good!
Also, I think the Decemberists win because they get a ton press out of the deal, and possibly sell some more albums!
HOLY SHIT GUYS! BEARS!
Well, they are on a major label now, so hopefully they're getting promoted to all hell. I really hope thath the Crane Wife does well for them. I really love that album, wow!!
I actually like it significantly more than either Castaways and Cutouts or Her Majesty, but I've not listened to Picaresque nearly enough to really justify an oppinion on it (my sister has it, while I have the other three, so I haven't ipodded it and listened to it obsessively) though I think it also ranks above their earlier stuff.
I agree with 3mm4 though, this is a meeting of two extremes of awesome, and the result can only be even more awesome.
