I did a thing - I'm serializing a spiritual sequel to Re:Creators

So, I had this thing write itself in my head over the last few months, and I finally got it onto the page...and I'm serializing it on Tapas - a spiritual sequel to Re:Creators: https://tapas.io/series/ReApotheosis/info

What is Re:Creators? Re:Creators was this pretty amazing show on Amazon Prime about fictional characters coming into the real world, discovering that they're fiction, and meeting their creators (oh yes, and having epic anime battles). It's basically the last half of The Last Action Hero as an anime. It's also a deep dive into how we create, why we create, and how we relate to what we create.

And, it got under my skin in a really big way. Enough that, well, this thing happened. It's all I've worked on for the last two months (I'd actually describe writing it more as an exorcism than anything else). So, this is my story about all these things, encompassing the media landscape that I grew up with and the creative industry that I've been a part of (everything from Sir Terry Pratchett - who I had the pleasure of having a cup of coffee with at Worldcon in 2003 - to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the comic book industry of the 1990s to the anime that I've only just started consuming in a serious way since the pandemic started).

Here is the blurb:

For over a century, fictional characters have been falling out of their stories into our world. Some want to go home. Some want a new life. Some want to meet their creators. Some want justice for their suffering.

And one will fight a bloody war to liberate them all.

And here is the cover and cast of creations:

Image

(From left to right and up to down, Daiki Yamato, an expy of isekai protagonists like Naofumi from Shield Hero; Jack Death, a rip-off of John Wick by a B-movie studio; Captain Infinite, an expy of Superman; Princess Stellaria, a JRPG NPC party member; Jenny Calhoun, an expy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer; The Destroyer, a devil king from a mediocre isekai series whose creator cared so little that he didn't even bother giving him a name; and Atria Silversword, a mech pilot.)

So, this was a labour of love - please do check it out, and if you like it, make an account on the site and subscribe (so that monetization can turn on and I can help pay my mortgage), and tell others about it!
