Guys - I Need Some Help :(

Postby TheRocket » 30 Jan 2007, 07:36

So, my Norton hath expired, and I seem to have acquired a Trojan.

I have AVG and did a scan and I'm not sure how much that did since it is still popping up.

On AVG it says the files the Trojan is in are the Norton ones? Is Norton sabbatogging my computer?? dicks.

I know people here on the LRR forums are wayyyyy more educated in computers than I... how the shit do I get rid of this trojan!???????@?@?!!

Help guys!!!

:(

You made yourself a set of emergency boot disks through Norton, right? (Norton still does that, I hope...) If you boot up with those and let them do their thing, they almost always will get rid of the virus.

I'd help, but last time I got a Trojan I couldn't get rid of my solution was o save what I wanted to keep to DVD(s) and wipe the hard drive. I hope you can get it fixed a better way. ^_^

This is actually quite a simple, and alarmingly common, problem which always happens when someone has 2 anti-virus programs installed...

Simple explaination, Norton picked up a trojan long ago, which you'd forgotton about, it expired, so you installed AVG, which then detected the original trojan, which Norton had quarantined.

Basically, the trojan file should still be neutralised, as it would be in the quarantine area of Norton. Uninstall Norton, delete any remaining files that it leaves behind, and then do a full system scan with AVg, just to make sure it's gone...

Patch is right. that happens all the time.
If the Trojan is in the quarantine list for Norton (which is where it should be) just delete it from there. If the Trojan is really corrupting the Norton files and is not being quarantined by Norton then you have to get rid of norton and reinstall it (only reinstall it if you want it back....)

Deinstalling Norton? Good luck!

These gorram Symantec programs dig themselves so deep into Windows you'll be lucky to have a working system after manually deleting all that crap.
Their "deinstaller" doesn't do much more than removing some desktop icons.

EDIT: Just found this, maybe it will help:

You do not need to be a programmer to use Linux. With a modern distro like Ubuntu things are not any more difficult than they are in Windows. But then again Windows can have its usability problems. If you want easy get a Mac.

Especially if you like WoW, WC3 and diablo. if you cant get the Trojan off, try spy bot and ad-aware. it might not work, but i have those and use them alot more than anything else, and they pick up about 95% of the stuff norton does.

Now what were you looking at when you got a Trojan?

And if you are going to get a Mac, be aware that only Blizzard actually put any effort into porting their stuff over to Mac. So the phrase "If you like WC3, WoW, and Diablo" is true, because they're pretty much all that can be played...

I use my Mac mostly to do my lab work and write, because pretty much everything is better on Mac except for the games.

Starcraft is one of the best games ever, and it works really well on my Mac.

So well that I had a 385 to 9 kill ratio when I was playing with my mates the other day.

Any idea where I can get this "Starcraft?" I've been dangerously productive recently.

You can get the battle chest pretty much anywhere for $30 or less. I got mine at London Drugs, but I recommend not buying things there, on account of how incompetent the monkeys can be at London Drugs.

Buying something from monkeys? That's a mistake I won't make again any time soon.

Although there's a definite advantage to being able to pay in coconuts.

Monkeys usually just try to sell you poop though.

That's pretty much where I ran into problems.
