Search Bar

Postby Ishamel » 10 Aug 2007, 09:21

Yo-
I have no idea how difficult it would be for Paul to code this, but I reckon a search bar to find fave videos would be quite 1337 as there are now zillions and the top 5 most viewed are not necessarily my top 5. twould make it easier for example to select and find vids from earlier series that you can't rememebr the titles of. I'm thinking of this now having just introduced a few friends to other comic delights via youtube, the search bar of which was invaluable. Again if it is impossible /would involve disrupting the site too much to code, don't bother.

CTRL+F, it's built into your browser.

This would be really easy to do.

well there's the short description under the title of the video, or if you think you know the category, there's already the option of searching by category. Or you can just spend a couple hours randomly going through half the videos (my preferred method).

Well, let's see. If I try to think of a video, I think of what it's about. Since pretty much all the videos are described in the name, it's pretty simple to just browse and find them.

Though I agree it probably wouldn't be hard to do.

My trouble is finding videos based on parts of the script.

Example, it took me ten minutes to find out which video had a scene of Paul and Graham in bed together (for my use in another thread). I had to think hard about which videos might have that scene, and I guessed wrongly a few times. Eventually I found it and took a screenie for my purposes.

Anywho, a database of all the video scripts would be really incredibly helpful, and wouldn't be code or resource intensive. I'd volunteer to transcribe all the videos into searchable text documents if Paul and the crew offer to code up a search system for the site. If you send me the DVD's (*cough*) I can even transcribe those videos not on the site into script format too!

That was going to be my next question. Which you answered. Well played.

Paul? Is this a silly amount of work?

Well, of course Paul would say best, but I would imagine it'd be a simple Ctrl+F style function in a database of text files. Doesn't seem too tough theoretically.

Search term "bed", pulls up every instance of the word bed. Since I'd transcribe things like "Paul and Graham wake up together in a bed" in addition to the actual dialogue, it should pull up that instance of bed, and off ya go.

I smell SQL and Perl scripts. Wait PHP on this site. Text files would be easier to enter but I think using a database would be faster. Maybe someway to tie the database in with the Wiki?

The wiki is just sad. Honestly guys. And by guys, I mean Mel, since no one else even visits it, much less edits it.

Hey I am the other person who edits the Wiki regularly. My point is the is an over lap between information in the Wiki and things you want to search for.

More importantly, it'd be more accurate if I transcribe it manually, as I watch each video. First hand information is always preferable.
