it's actually over 16000

and it's higher than the view count shows at the moment, as the video has been dropped into "batten down the hatches" mode, and as such, the view count doesn't update automatically. paul will continue to update the view count manually periodically.

I gave the link to my pal Tim, and he's gonna spread it around his school, which will further infect the interweb.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things.
They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death.
Yet there is one thing they fear above all others.
They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!

That doesn't explain anything, it's just another vague metaphor.*

Batten Down the Hatches mode (or BDtH as Paul calls it) is something Paul implements when a video starts getting a lot of views.

Every time the main page is refreshed, a ping to the server has to go for the view counters, and the random video.
BDtH disables those features so it's less taxing on the server.

Without getting too technical, it means switching the page over from the dynamically generated PHP page to a static version of the same page. This disables some of the nice dynamic features (live view count, changing random video, etc) but is a much lighter load on the server. BDtH mode is something I setup in the last site redesign, after the traffic spike from How to Talk like a Pirate took LRR offline, not from bandwidth usage, but because we were using 100% of the system resources on our server.

The only difference you should notice is that the view count and the random video will not change.

'Batten down the hatches' is a marine term. It means to close up and seal 'batten down' any openings such as windows and doors 'hatches'. If one was expecting severe weather one would batten down the hatches to prevent the interior of the ship from getting soaked.

Paul is using this figuratively as the storm is higher site traffic.

I know it not a high priority and it may not work with the server set you have, but Paul could not you have a script run on the server that runs every say 15 min that updates the view count and changes the random video?

It seems there's a predictable pattern behind LRR's most popular videos:

1) Find a well-known cultural topic that is relevant and familiar to most of the young people on the 'Net.

2) Parody this topic.

3) The familiarity will lower the 'investment' people must make when deciding whether to learn about a new thing, so many people will watch the video because of its topic. The humor contained therein will get them. Then they will forward the video to many other people, who will easily watch it because of the familiar topic, and so on.

4) Massive site views.

With this formula, you could - dare I say it? Yes, I dare! - rule the world.
