Desert Bus: the Aftermath

Postby The Pious Flea » 28 Nov 2007, 08:01

$22,805 was collected. That's 4.561 times the original projected maximum, guys.

You'll end up paying a fortune in Paypal fees, but I don't think you could have bought the publicity and goodwill you've acquired for ten times that much. Unless you donated it to Child's Play.

I hope CP specially notes your efforts, 'cause you'll be bringing in an amount roughly equal to around 4% of their total thus far.

I'm not sure what you could do for next year. Possibly try to make a record for continual play? Or two racing Desert Buses, perhaps. What would induce as much suffering as this does?

(Ahem) Desert Bus T-shirts, anyone? There are already a whole bunch of graphics to choose from, it wouldn't take much editing to get one of the money amount updates to be in t-shirt form and accurate to the money amount.

Plus you know there's the whole, "I survived Desert Bus for Hope and all I go twas this lousy t-shirt", idea, but this is more applicable to those who actually played the game during the 4.5 days of busing. However I sense this can be a great way to make up for the paypal fees and also a method to donate even more to Child's Play if you do something like 50% of the proceeds form the DB t-shirts go to child's play.

Something like that.

I believe that teller, since paypal refused to accept his donation, was going to cover up to $500 of the fees... which is very close to being all of them I believe.

Is it really tragic to say I had a GREAT time in the chatroom? I had so much work to do over the weekend but I was an utter ADDICT!

I ate too many Jaffa cakes too

Has there been much thought to next year's charity event (if any), yet? It seemed kind of obvious that it won't be Desert Bus again.

I guess a better question would be what made Desert Bus such a hit in the first place. For me, it wasn't about the game itself, but more the 24 hours a day of interactivity with cool people. Considering that the drivercam typically seemed to have about 100 more viewers at any given time than the buscam, I think a lot of other people felt the same way.

Whatever you guys decide to do in the future, I hope it involves a similar level of interactivity. And hopefully next year you'll smash an already awesome record.

BTW, does this large donation qualify you guys as Platinum Sponsors for Child's Play? I thought I overheard somebody say that at one point, but I couldn't really find much info on sponsorship on their site.

Whatever we do next year, it will involve interactivity. That is, without question, what made Desert Bus such a hit.

We do qualify as a platinum sponsor! They'll be updating the page at some point with our logo!

Also, if the buscam ever had more viewers than the drivercam, then something was horribly wrong.

Congratulations!

If that doesn't get you more viewers, I don't know what will.

I got home at 8am this morning and had terrible nightmares about Desert Bus. I think I might have post-traumatic bus syndrome.
