Escape from New York

Postby The Pious Flea » 09 Mar 2008, 15:55

Tomorrow I begin the long bus ride to New York City to see my littlest brother sing at Carnegie Hall. It will be approximately 24 hours before I can escape the great monstrous steel and concrete midden that is New York.

So... what should I do while I'm waiting for the concert? Suggestions appreciated. Are there sights worth the seeing in the Horrible Apple? Should I just bring a book?

Well...

Seeing as your lil brudda is singing at Carnegie, I'd suggest just staying local to that. You could catch a matinee of a Broadway show or off-broadway play, go to NY MOMA, eat at a real Kosher Deli.

It really all depends on what you like to do.

I'm just this side of broke. Catching a play sounds interesting, but probably too expensive.

A deli might be interesting. I'm told there's a relatively cheap but quality restaurant within Macy's, wherein I will probably be dragooned into 'shopping' for too long.

For the money issue, that's what TKTS booths are for. Their website is http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56/.

Just walk through the city. It's an amazing place to look at. Walk through Central Park and go to the kick-ass zoo in the middle of it! There are millions of things to do in a city like New York.

Gyro's/Falafels kick ass there. Apple Store is sweeeeeet. Going to the top floor of Empire State Building is damn scary but good place for pictures.

If you go to Harlem, White Castle. Otherwise, don't buy the bootleg movies.

Guys, an Apple store is an Apple store. The only difference from any other is that it's big.

Isn't the world Pokemon Center in NY somewhere? If so, you should totally check it out.

You don't have to be 7 to enjoy pokemon or want novlety items. XP I'd go there in a heartbeat if I was in NY (or wherever this place is at).

I think the Pokemon Center was replaced by the Nintendo Store. I want to go there. Apparently they have the Gameboy that still works despite some pretty nasty damage received during the Gulf War. I still have a Gameboy that was on a US Carrier during Desert Storm and Shield.

When I was there last year, the entire first floor was devoted to Pokemon in nearly every way, shape and form (or region). It seemed to me that it was still there, just with a generic Nintendo store on top of it. Either way I didn't mind, I got my overpriced Yoshi plushie and Nintendo baseball cap.

Well, the "real Deli" restaurant we found charged $9.99 for three eggs, $3.95 for a chocolate chip cookie, and had a $12.50 minimum per person. When we noticed that the menu proudly proclaimed the establishment could hold parties of 300 when the notice just inside the kitchen door listed the maximum occupancy at 158, we left.

We found a nice Italian place on 8th and W 57th that made a delicious, gigantic pizza for $13.

Seeing the bro perform at Carnegie was quite impressive... although the families of the choir kept applauding in-between the movements. The conductor kept holding up his hand to get them to stop, but I don't think they understood.

In fairness, I started (very quietly) clapping myself when they first started - out of habit, I think. The musicians looked very peeved.
