Birthdays, and their ineffable effects.

Postby AlexanderDitto » 09 May 2008, 04:23

Oh sure, perhaps this thread is a thinly veiled excuse to mention that it happens to be my Birthday, a time of jubilation for all.

BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT. I have a valid avenue of inquiry. I've found that, in recent years, on my birthday, it seems like the entire world was made for me.

I think of the smallest things as being special. Oh, someone posted a reply to a topic, and the datestamp has my Birthday on it! It is a tiny gift, from the 'bove. A webcomic that always updates on Fridays updated today, on my Birthday? That webcomic is ultra-special, because it is my Birthday-comic. My cereal seems to have EXTRA delicious oat clusters in it? The planets have aligned, for me, on my Birthday! :O

My question is this: am I crazy? Well, yes, probably. I'm sure it's just a frame of mind, but it does feel like when things go well on your Birthday, they're all some sort of joyous gift.

Also what is your people's birthdays? I feel like I should know these, so I can wish you happy birthdays and show you with pictures of cats doing funny things.

I do not care for my own birthday. I don't celebrate it, and kinda get agitated when people make me do so. Also, my birthday is January 1st, 1987.

I've actually noticed the opposite, for myself and many of my friends. It seems that birthdays, far from their jubilant expectations, are instead riddled with small waves of depression from an astounding number of sources. It is probably a bit of confirmation bias on my part, but it seems those close to me have done everything from catching a cold, to failing an exam, to breaking a limb, all on their birthdays. Maybe it is just the heightened expectations of good fortune not being fully actualized, but birthdays seem like one of the more depressing times of the year.

That being said, I still get a form of that "special" feeling you mentioned whenever I come across my birthdate.

My bday is September 2nd, 1988.
I definitely tend to think the world revolves around me for that day XD

It doesn't help any that WWE is having a pay-per-view near me, around 4 days after my birthday... (they're doing it JUST FOR ME, clearly 8))

Man I'm older than all of you. I feel like I've misplaced my cane or

Birthdays are a sore point for me because people always make the assumption my birthday must suck so I've gotten into the habit of not telling people when it is. It happens to be on Christmas Eve which I love. I love the holiday and the snow and the tasty vittles. Its other people that have a problem with it.

The worst part is people make promises like, "I don't have time now but you've got presents coming" or "I've got a card for you that I forgot at home." Five months later and nothing. I'd rather no one made any promises.

And herein lies the lesson, never be born near a major holiday or have crappy friends like me.

I feel like that every day. :) Well, not that the world revolves around me but that it's a "joyous gift." :)

mine is 2/29. so I'll be expecting a "happy bday" in another ~3.5 years. :)

I used to not tell anyone about my birthday, but for the past three years I was like: WOHOOOO IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!! WOOOOO HUG ME!!!!

Yeah... I'm kinda annoying on my birthday :3

I was born in June 7 1981, so that makes me a bit older than most of you O_o
